President is considering restoring a pool once used by Roosevelt, which would lead to the eviction of the media from West Wing, according to reports
President Trump has suggested replacing the White House press room with an indoor swimming pool, effectively removing news outlets from the building, according to reports.
Trump proposed the idea to Karoline Leavitt, the former White House press secretary, several times before she stepped down from her post in August, the New York Times reported, citing three people with knowledge of the discussions.
“America is rightly distrustful of the fake news media because they fabricate stories based off lies and sources who are not even privy to any type of information,” Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, told the paper.
“All options remain on the table, and we will make an announcement when appropriate.”
In 1933, during Franklin D Roosevelt’s presidency, a pool was built in the west terrace to help the president manage his polio symptoms.
Nearly four decades later, in 1970, President Richard Nixon arranged for the pool to be covered and for the space to be transformed into a press briefing room, to accommodate the expanding Washington media.
Before Leavitt’s departure Trump reportedly told her to remove the press from the James S Brady press briefing room, where along with a smaller room nearby, a group of reporters are based to cover the administration.
The proximity of a designated media group to the Oval Office is considered symbolic of the role of a free press in American democracy. Trump’s idea to remove them is something he has suggested before, including in his first term.
