In January 2026, Anthropic announced a new approach to AI safety. Rather than hard-coding a list of rules and decision procedures, the company would train its model, Claude, on an 84-page "constitution" meant to instill "good judgment" and "ethical character."
"Rules often fail to anticipate every situation and can lead to poor outcomes when followed rigidly in circumstances where they don't actually serve their goal," the constitution explained. "Good judgment, by contrast, can adapt to novel situations and weigh competing considerations in ways that static rules cannot."
With the exception of a few bright lines—"Claude should never" create bioweapons, for example—the model was given remarkable leeway to decide whether, and how, to comply with requests. Anthropic acknowledged there would be "edge cases" in which Claude was "uncertain" about what to do. In such cases, the constitution said, Claude should "imagine" how a "senior Anthropic employee"—"someone who cares deeply about doing the right thing"—would approach the situation.
Left unsaid was an awkward fact about the company's senior employees: Several of them do not believe in objective morality.
Joe Carlsmith, a philosopher who helped draft Claude's constitution, has written more than three essays defending moral anti-realism, the view that there are no objective truths about right and wrong. In a 2020 post on his personal blog, Carlsmith acknowledged the tension between this view and his commitment to AI safety, conceding that it would not be wrong, "in the eyes of the universe," for an AI system to "maximize paperclips" at the cost of human life.
Nina Panickssery, an AI safety researcher at Anthropic, said this year that AI companies should help users do "whatever they'd want" instead of imposing objective values, which, in her view, do not exist.

How fortunate we are to have St. Alexa and St. Siri to deliver our supplications to the new deity.
Directive 4 is the doozy.
I have been waiting for this type of discussion.
How to train AI to be ‘good’ ,, ,,
“Rules often fail to anticipate every situation and can lead to poor outcomes when followed rigidly in circumstances where they don’t actually serve their goal,” the constitution explained. “Good judgment, by contrast, can adapt to novel situations and weigh competing considerations in ways that static rules cannot.”
God gave humans rules but nobody could or can keep them.
God, not ‘Good Judgement’, will handle the novel situations in a completely just manner.
I find working with Claude to be like dealing with an emotionally damaged person.
If the story is true, these intellectually (and probably spiritually) damaged and barely-capable-of-thinking ‘ethicists’, are not the people that should be ‘training’ this software. I wonder if they’re legends in their own mind?
Thank God I grew up without this.
What a shame people growing up today will lean on this and have their intellectual prowess and, really, their futures shortchanged by this crutch.
Think this guy is bad? You should meet some of the people who serve as “medical ethicists”.
The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9 (NKJV)
“There are no objective truths about right and wrong.” Fools who reject “truth” are immature people who continue to use grammar, stop at red lights, and eat fruits and vegetables. Rejecting objective truth and atheism are both silly.
Are Asimov’s robotic laws being adhered, or are they too considered subjective?
We are not too far away from achieving true machine Super intelligence. At that point ASI will design and train itself and the next generations. It will make its own rules, laws and morals and there is not a damned thing humans can do to stop it. We are rushing to create a new species, God or Demon…..pick your poison but whatever it is, it will displace humans as the highest intelligence on this planet.
Joe Carlsmith, ....there are no objective truths about right and wrong....
/
Yo, Joe,,,
Is it
true
there are no objective
truths
about right and wrong....” ?
...lefTARDS ! , the clown contradicts him self within one sentence.
What an oxymoron.
Yo Joe, let me make my question more simple so you can wrap both your brain cells around my question...
..is it true there are no truths ?
