French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Monday that a state of emergency could be imposed "if needed", while adding that curfews were a better solution to the crisis over violent protests.
With six months to go before France elects a successor to President Emmanuel Macron, the country was rocked over the weekend by some of its worst street violence in years. The unrest came after weeks of student demonstrations demanding better conditions in schools.
"I am absolutely determined to restore order," Lecornu said after a crisis meeting, adding he did not rule out imposing a state of emergency.
"If needed, I will do it," he said.
"As things stand, however, the issue of curfews, and the implementation of those curfews, seems better suited to the situation we may be facing."
In France, a state of emergency grants authorities temporary powers that go beyond ordinary policing in order to respond to a serious threat to public order or national security.
Measures can include curfews, restrictions on movement, and bans on public demonstrations.
Lecornu said he had asked regional authorities to impose "localised" curfews on Monday evening, notably to protect businesses.
A map of the curfew zones was set to be released later Monday following consultations with mayors.
"Watching television, the French get the impression that it's chaos everywhere. Fortunately, that's not the case," Lecornu said. "The disorder is highly concentrated in urban centres."
At least 3,000 businesses were affected by the unrest, according to Trade and Small Businesses Minister Serge Papin.

If needed? I guess as long as the rioters have not broken into the Palais de l’Elysée and raped Bridgett Macron, he won’t pull the trigger on the state of emergency.
“At least 3,000 businesses were affected by the unrest”
Yeah...”affected” 🙄
I hear all the muslim businesses have been completely left alone.
Very telling.
“If needed? I guess as long as the rioters have not broken into the Palais de l’Elysée and raped Bridgett Macron, he won’t pull the trigger on the state of emergency.”
I’m not sure that would even be enough. There must be some really good money in allowing the destruction of your country.
IKR?
No rush. SMH
Remember, these are Leftists that are rioting and the government is Leftists. They cannot clamp down on their own people without delegitimizing their own ideology.
Maroon is already trying the ‘Bill Clinton’ strategy of ‘triangulation’ to distance himself from the rioters...............
> adding that curfews were a better solution to the crisis <
Huh? There is great violence in the streets. Vehicles and buildings are being set on fire. And no one has considered a curfew before now?
Pity that the French government did not consider imposing a curfew on the invading Germans back in 1940. That might have avoided whole occupation thing.
🤔
The nfl has a game in Paris this Sunday.
Might get interesting.
The French are notorious for their naive complacency.
The state of emergency should’ve been declared long ago.
Side note to my post #8. It would be interesting to hear how the French government would enforce a curfew. What would the police do that they aren’t already doing?
Perhaps they will hold up big signs saying “Go home now”. These signs should be in Arabic, of course.
Every post apocalyptical novel ever written starts with the cities becoming unlivable...............
Yeah this guy is an inspiration. A true man of steel.
Oh, wait, ... he's French you say? In that case I take it all back.
The problem for France with declaring a State of Emergency is that they may get their bluff called and have to open fire on the protesters. The threat of a curfew is LAUGHABLE.
The Louve is closed for good reason.
Meanwhile, Macron is on a three day jolly to the Middle East.
“It beggars belief he hasn’t already started shooting rioters.”
They can’t. It’s their base.................
The National Felons League will feel quite at home.
Meanwhile, on the Louve...
Louvre...

apparently, it’s OK that these unmitigated insurrections are ONLY in population-dense urban areas where there are sufficient concentrations of buildings and businesses to easily loot and burn ...
