Air Travel Emerges as Dangerous Front Line in Global Conflicts

Governments caution flying to Saudi Arabia, or through its airspace, after weekend attack left at least 12 dead

Commercial air travel has been dragged into the front lines of escalating conflicts across the globe, with airports, planes and airspace becoming the deliberate target of missile and drone attacks on a scale not seen before.

Since the U.S. and Israel started the Iran war in February, major airports across the Middle East have been repeatedly targeted. Parked aircraft have been hit by missiles or falling debris from interceptor systems, killing crew members and passengers. The threat culminated Saturday in a Houthi missile strike at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport that killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300 others.

The strike, the deadliest attack on Saudi Arabia in more than a decade and among the worst direct missile attacks on a civilian airport, left airlines scrambling to divert scores of aircraft and cancel more than 1,000 other flights. Other major Saudi airports have also been hit, all but cementing the collapse of one of the two remaining primary air corridors connecting Europe and Asia.

Governments including the U.S., U.K. and Australia are telling citizens to avoid the Riyadh airport following the attack. France, Canada and Germany are warning airlines that flying over all or large parts of Saudi Arabia is no longer safe.

The active targeting of aircraft and airports this year by conventional missiles and long-range drones is unprecedented in its frequency and the damage inflicted at major airports, and the threat is being exacerbated by dwindling supplies of air...

Heck, all I need to see are the vids of the gangs of ghettopotomus’ brawling on planes and in the airports to know that air travel is hazardous. Google “airline passengers in 1960” and click on “images” to see what I remember.

Todays airlines are nothing more than Greyhound buses with wings.

I’ll start flying again when customers go back to being passengers instead of cargo.

To say the U.S. and Israel “started” the war is uninformed at best.

Iran has been at war with the U.S. and Israel for about 47 years. This is just the latest “hot” phase of the war.

Another, recent “hot” phase was the October 7th attack on Israelites by Hamas.

My dad was a pilot and when we flew non-revenue as children, we had to wear a coat and tie.

FTA

Commercial air travel has been dragged into the front lines of escalating conflicts across the globe,
with airports, planes and airspace becoming the deliberate target of missile and drone attacks
on a scale not seen before....ever since the US and Israel started bombing Iran February 28, 2026.

Reality Check

A former well-versed Mossad official stated that the Trump administration underestimated
Iran and miscalculated how much pain and resilience the regime was willing to absorb.

The former head of the counter-terrorism division of the world-class premiere intel agency......the Israeli Mossad......remarked that the US failed to fully understand the Iranian fundamentalist mindset, which does not operate on standard win-loss calculations.

Observers and analysts noted that the US and Israel anticipated a quick victory...... or a collapse of the regime...... following initial military campaigns, underestimating Iran’s institutional resilience, military depth, and willingness to endure a prolonged conflict.

I have friends trying to get to Pakistan in a few days. Between the constant low-level warfare with India in the Himalayas, the airstrikes from Pakistan against the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the Persian Gulf fighting that has hit Doha (Qatar) and Dubai airports and now Saudi Arabia, it’s a wonder if they’ll be able to get in. I was joking with a friend (she earned a nursing degree to be able to use her skills to reach women in sex trafficking situations in 3rd world areas and is a _very_ experienced traveler) that she’d need to hire a sketchy Somali “fishing boat” crew to take her in via the Arabian sea when planning the trip.

Shades of the Middle Ages, 30 Years War and many other wars in that era when civilians were wiped out. In our era, we have the bombing of London, Dresden, Tokyo. Mankind doesn’t seem to change.

Pres Trump ordered massive bombing when the respected and knowledgeable Israeli P/M Netanyahu showed a 2012 illustration and described his long-held deep concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions which foreign intel confirmed was just weeks away.(September 27, 2012 pic. POLITICO——Dwindling supplies of air defense missiles are exacerbating the threat of
unprecedented missile and drone attacks targeting commercial aircraft and major global airports.

As intnl conflicts intensify, frequent use of missiles and long-range drones by militant groups
—such as strikes targeting infrastructure like the Riyadh airport—
has severely strained global defense networks.

According to reports from the WSJ, military forces and
regional allies are running low on advanced interceptors.

This depletion leaves critical aviation corridors and
airports vulnerable to sustained aerial bombardments.

Time to start hiring some of the local hit-men in Yemen to start popping the some of the bad guys. I’m sure the locals know who they are, and at say $10,000/pop (chicken feed to us but a fortune to the locals), we would get a pretty good ROI.

I think there are countless millions of people around the world who are counting on President Trump to do whatever needs to be done to ensure that Iran is permanently rendered incapable of ever again attacking another country. These people are counting on President Trump because no other country and no international organization has the leadership
capability to get that job done. That fact has become indisputable by the current conflict in Iran!

In 2002 Testimony Before the US Congress, Netanyahu (not in office in 2002) appeared before the US House Committee on Government Reform. Netanyahu strongly advocated for a US military intervention, claiming there was "no question whatsoever" that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons--and had WMD .

In his testimony and media appearances, Netanyahu argued that a pre-emptive strike against Saddam Hussein would have "enormous positive reverberations" across the Middle East.

=======================================================

UPSHOT: Netanyahu's 2002 Iraq invasion advocacy has frequently been referenced by US officials and politicians in later years to disparage Netanyahu's intelligence assessments and lack of foreign policy judgment regarding US military interventions in the Mideast.

====================================================

The 2003 US invasion of Iraq resulted in catastrophic human and financial consequences:

Over 4,400 to 4,598 US military personnel were killed during the war and its aftermath, with more than 31,000 to 32,000 wounded in combat. Thousands of U.S. contractors and allied troops also died.

Estimates of direct and indirect war-related deaths range from 210,000 to over 300,000 civilians (with independent projects like Iraq Body Count tracking over 210,000 violent civilian deaths and broader academic estimates pushing total direct/indirect casualties much higher).

Millions of Iraqis were internally displaced or fled the country as refugees, triggering a long-term humanitarian and sectarian crisis........ that also laid the groundwork for the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS).

==============================================

For US taxpayers, the financial Toll was massive:
<>Direct US military and operational spending on the Iraq War surpassed $2 trillion tax dollars.
<>lifetime medical and disability veterans care, interest payments on debt to finance the war,
<>plus eternal counter-terrorism operations,
<>had costs skyrocketing to some $3-6 trillion over subsequent decades.

The US' ill-conceived military sojurn in Iraq lasted 8 1/2 years and not one WMD was found.

"...the Trump administration underestimated Iran and miscalculated how much pain and resilience the regime was willing to force its own citizenry to absorb...."

Fixed it for you.

If the US is responsible for regime change in Iran, it'll only turn into another tar baby. The best we can do is to destabilize the government so that the common citizenry can do it for themselves. It's up to them to decide how much punishment they're willing to absorb before they get off their asses and do something.
