Former President Barack Obama came out in support of Troy Jackson’s Senate bid on Thursday after the candidate’s first debate with Susan Collins.
“Troy Jackson is running to be your next Senator and I’m proud to be on board. In this economy, we need a fighter like Troy, a fifth-generation logger,” said Obama.
“Now we need Troy to deliver for us in the Senate, so do not sit this one out. Get out there and vote for Troy Jackson,” he added.
In the 50-second video, Obama repeated the claim that Jackson used to work 80-hour weeks logging and was still struggling to afford basic necessities.
The former president repeated a variety of Jackson’s campaign talking points, including claims that he fought to raise wages, lower prescription drug costs, and expand abortion access.
Jackson has consistently highlighted Sen. Collins’ vote in favor of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the subsequent overturning of Roe v. Wade and has tried to make abortion a key aspect of his campaign, despite Maine already having one of the most permissive abortion laws in the country.
Obama’s endorsement comes as a number of prominent left-wing figures throw their support behind the candidate in the wake of his performance at the first Senate debate on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Jackson sat for a glowing interview with former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.
Shortly before Obama’s endorsement was published, Democrat-megadonor and horror author Stephen King issued his own statement endorsing the Democrat nominee, referring to him as Troy “the Boy” Jackson.
