North Carolinians who have been inundated with TV campaign commercials may start noticing a gap in ads for Senate candidate Michael Whatley.
The Whatley campaign has temporarily pulled ads on television, a campaign source told McClatchy.
The source said this is a short-term adjustment of who the campaign is targeting.
“We are confident we have the resources to target our late-breaking supporters and win on Election Day,” the source said.
The campaign’s decision comes as national Republicans pull away from North Carolina’s Senate race to focus on other candidates nationwide.
Whatley, 58, a Republican from Gastonia, is facing off against former Gov. Roy Cooper, 69, a Democrat from Raleigh.
Cooper spent nearly 40 years in North Carolina politics serving in both the state House and Senate, four terms as attorney general and two terms as governor, before being term-limited.
Whatley has served in both behind the scenes positions as an energy industry lobbyist and as chief of staff for former Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and as the face of the Republican Party as chairman on both the state and national levels.
But since the two men entered the race, in July 2025, Cooper has led every poll, often by double digits.
And the polls consistently show that Whatley lacks name recognition.

Has the candidate run out of money for pay for the ads?
We can still win in TX, MI, ME, etc.
You can't be cut off from your own money.
Either he has it, or he doesn't. No one else controls whether his campaign runs ads besides him.
Whatley should have hired Spencer Pratt to run his ad campaign.
Senate GOP funding redirected funds to other candidates...they wrote off this election.
May be that they’ve figured out that TV ads don’t change anything with their target voters. I’ve hardly heard of him but I don’t watch TV and if he’s not a lefty I’ll vote for him. Just gotta check my GRNC list ta make sure he’s in favor there.
Of course, you don't see RINOs doing that.
Whatley was a terrible candidate. Lara Trump should have run.
💯
Agree
GOP has lots of terrible candidates this year. NC, GA, TX, KS.
And SC. It wouldn’t be that close if Ralph Norman is the candidate.
It doesn’t help statewide candidates that Trump’s approval rating is below 48 percent in each of those states and below 42 percent in all but Texas.
Hey More on,
How about run an ad with Irina pointing out what happens when Democrat judges like the ones Cooper has/will appoint let these monsters out? That happened in North Carolina, on Cooper’s watch.
How about an ad where the Democrats sat down when Trump asked to put Americans first over Illegal Immigrants? Or when that Illegal was given a driver’s license by California Democrats and killed that van full of people?
There’s about a gazillion other ads
What? Chuck Schumer might call you a racist if you do that? Well yeah, I guess it’s better to be a gracious loser than have that.
Who the ^&!@#* is advising these Republicans? Fire them immediately.
As compared to backstabber Cornyn?
I think Trump thought Cooper would win and if Lara lost it would probably end her chances going forward.
GOP PULLED THE DOUGH........
Texas Republicans should have chosen Wesley Hunt.
Every candidate should have used the Irina Zarutska murder, nationwide, not only in NC.
