US unemployment below 5% approaches historic record not seen since mid-1960s

For many US households, it may not feel like the economy is doing well amid the higher cost of living brought on by the US war on Iran.

But believe it or not, the US economy is nearing an impressive achievement on the unemployment front.

The US unemployment rate is nearing a record number of consecutive months below 5%, Truist chief strategist Keith Lerner pointed out (see the chart below). The longtime record dates back to the mid-1960s.

It's a worthwhile perspective to keep in mind as markets attempt to rationalize a surprisingly weak September jobs report.

Employers added just 29,000 jobs, far below economists' expectations for roughly 90,000 and below the prior 12-month average monthly gain of 45,000.

July's employment was revised from a 21,000 gain to a 10,000 decline, and August's employment was cut from 162,000 to 133,000. That put the two-month revision at 60,000 fewer jobs than previously reported.

The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2% from 4.1%, while the labor-force participation rate held at 61.8%, suggesting the rise in unemployment was modest rather than a sign of a sudden labor-market collapse.

"Recent data also reinforced what we have been seeing in terms of this very low hire, but also very low fire condition, including the idea that while there is selective weakening in some areas, the labor market as a whole remains decent," said Rick Rieder, BlackRock's chief investment officer of global fixed income.

AI-related spending is possibly the single biggest thing driving the economy. If that disappeared the economy would tank.

The higher cost of living is due to the illegals that are in this country region of price of housing and free everything.

Excuse me? Trump is reshoring manufacturing and that is also
driving the economy to new heights. That and tariffs.

How many able-bodied adults are getting benefits? How many people are not looking for work and thus not in the reported number? Years ago, at an industry conference, we were told there is baseline of hard-core unemployables of about 3% - drug and alcohol, mental issues, criminal, etc.

People mentioned this before.
Removing millions of illegals would reduce the net job gains (the jobs gained by US citizens are offset by immigrants departing), but keep the labor participation and unemployment steady.

People who were being locked out of the jobs market because they were not the right ethnicity are being hired.

Like truck drivers and factory workers. People who work in nursing homes and receptionists.

Blue and pink collar jobs that if you applied as an American Citizen your resume went right into file thirteen.

Now that they can no longer import people to fill those jobs they are discovering that yes, Americans will do those jobs.

Funny how that works.

Manufacturing under Trump is soaring. Manufacturing hiring up, government hiring down. Producers vs takers.

Nothing happens until somebody makes something. No teachers. No doctors……..nothing

Basically any American who wants a job can have a job. We can thank President Trump for that - more industrial jobs and fewer illegals working under the table works magic.

SI is just one of many factors.
Equally significant is that reduction in government employment increases the private sector even bigger than the cut in the government sector.

That could be increased. Much of government employment is handling the WASTE in FRAUD WASTE ABUSE. eXAMPLE. Deloitte IES is FRAUD. But the garbage data it sends down stream means a big waste of money trying to work with that garbage data.

They stopped counting Americans who have basically just stopped looking because they are Americans and speak English so not hired.

We got rid of the illegal aliens and not only did the unemployment rate drop but the economy didn't collapse.

There goes that 'we need immigrants' narrative.

...”How can you tell when a politician, economist, or any other so-called “expert” is lying to you...?
“The second you see their lips begin to move....”

...we are constantly being lied to, expecially so now that the mid-terms are just a month or so away.....

Sorry, these are still BS numbers. I am 100% positive they’re still dropping people off the counts that have been unemployed for a couple months. Meaning they are still unemployed, just not counted. Owebowma changed this and loads of people were mad because it was a lie. It still is a lie.
How many working aged people are unemployed? Let’s get that real number, shall we?
