On Tuesday, he signed a document that paves the way to expanding the U.S. military presence on the island, opening new bases. But it explicitly stops short of conveying any territory to the United States. And no one — especially Denmark, which governs the vast but mostly empty space — wanted to emphasize that point, for fear that Mr. Trump might renounce the agreement he had just hailed as “tremendous for Europe and for the US.”
Mikkel Olesen, a researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, described the final document, which was released Tuesday, as only a moderate improvement for the US, achieved at considerable political cost.
“It is an extraordinarily high price to pay for relatively limited changes,” he said, maintaining that Mr. Trump’s threats did lasting damage to relations with Denmarkand Europe.
The 1951 accord essentially gave the US the right to build bases across Greenland, and at the height of the Cold War there were more than a dozen. At one point there was even a plan for an under-the-ice nuclear weapons base. But expense, and then the end of the Cold War, led to the abandonment of many of the facilities. Vice President JD Vance visited one of the remaining ones, Pituffik Space Base, in March 2025, declaring that the United States had to “wake up” to China’s and Russia’s designs on the island.
One key change in the new document is an explicit description of how Greenland would be bound by the terms of the accord even if it became independent of Denmark.
“In case Greenland exercises its right to self-determination to become independent, the government of the Kingdom of Denmark and the government of Greenland shall together ensure that the independent Greenlandic state will agree to remain in NATO,” the document says.

People at the NYT can’t be that stupid!! This is just typical anti-Trump and anti-Reality propaganda from now just a propaganda outlet. Trump got EVERYTHING he wanted! He has complete security control of Greenland and it’s surrounding sea lanes. That was his primary objective, everything else was just a negotiation tactic.
However, the Dutch only exist for now. As the US security presence increases and becomes the largest economic function, I am certain that the demographic will change. Then it will be independence, and finally a ‘state’ of Greenland. It’s inevitable.
That will ease their troubled minds immensely.

The fake news NY times is incapable of complimenting anyone who does not toe their commie line. Had Trump announced he was going to pursue ‘an agreement’ with Greenland then made a deal owning Greenland he’d still be harpooned. No winning with these disgusting TDS suffers.
It’s a permanent US protectorate even if Greenland declares independence. And both Denmark and Greenland are on notice that Chinese mining concessions with port facilities are a hard “no”.
This was an outstanding get, another yuge accomplishment that makes all parties stronger. I do not think NATO is going anywhere and this also makes it stronger. Now if we can just get Germany to get it’s act together and join us in developing the Arctic. Send some brain power, muscle and money and meet us at OUR base in Greenland.
