Britain is facing a potential slavery reparations lawsuit from Caribbean nations.
The issue is due to be raised at the Commonwealth summit hosted in Antigua in November, which the King is set to attend.
The Caribbean Community group confirmed last week it was 'preparing to advance reparations on the agenda of the upcoming 28th Commonwealth heads of government meeting'.
Member countries have long demanded trillions in compensation for the slave trade, described by the UN this year as 'the gravest crime against humanity'. Britain abolished slavery in 1834 throughout most of its empire, decades before the US did so.
The UK has long rebuffed reparations demands, with Downing Street saying: 'The transatlantic slave trade was abhorrent. We fully recognise the strength of feeling.
'The UK's position is clear – we do not and will not pay reparations. The UK is committed to continued dialogue with all our partners on legacies of the past.'
But Mia Mottley, the prime minister of Barbados, is hosting a conference this week to discuss how to obtain compensation and has suggested legal action via the international courts as an option.

Europe was a small part of the slave trade, and they are also the ones who ended the slave trade.
Do these morons realize slavery has been around for thousands of years and is still used today in some countries? Maybe a countersuit is filed against this frivolous BS!!
Same old story; slavery was abolished so long ago that I’m pretty certain there are no slaves alive today. Of course, that that doesn’t stop the sons & daughters of slaves from generations back trying to collect. Good luck to them. Many times, the money may not be available even if adequate proof were offered. Why did the agrieved person or persons wait until now to make this plea? >>>this would be a good question.
I have noticed that Singapore has not called for reparations from Britain during the time it was a colony.

When Napoleon I was defeated and sent into exile (the first time) European leaders all met at the Congress of Vienna to redraw the subsequent map of Europe.
The British delegate attended with one immovable demand...that all Congress attendees must end slaving and slave holding...

I dare say that had they not lost the colonies, they wouldn't have done that because the pro-slavery voices in parliament would have been much stronger.
Everyone will defend their means of earning money. The same would have happened in the British government of 1834.

It is simple, the former colonies are still relatively poor because of their own over regulated quasi socialist economies. The leaders of these countries are not going to blame themselves for slow economic growth over the past one hundred years, so best blame the former colonizers.
Or wage a war.
Surprised the Caribbeans are not demanding Arabs provide reparations. Arabs practice slavery today. Arabs bring young boys and girls into their States and take their passports and only give them back when they feel like it.

Yes indeed. Perhaps they should join forces with the offspring of Incan, Aztec, American Indian slaves. Also the slaves who built the Egyptian pyramids. The Vikings had slaves. And on and on and on.....
If not for Britain banning the slave trade, to be followed by other European nations, slavery would likely still be going on today. And of course, it is going on today in the form of sex slavery.
Maybe Mississippi should sue Rhode Island and Massachusetts for slavery reparations. And don’t forget those deep pocket, oil rich Muslims.
A few trillion dollars would certainly boost the state coffers.
Plenty of winning black tribes selling their captured adversaries, too.
