The Beatles told us: "All you need is love."
They were right, but along with love must come marriage.
But marriage rates have plummeted, especially among young men.
A Pulitzer Prize-worthy story by Sean Salai of The Washington Times crunches all the numbers. To say they are worrisome would be a vast understatement.
-- In 2025, nearly twice as many men ages 18 to 39 were unmarried as were married.
-- There were 30.4 million unmarried men ages 18 to 39 in 2025, up 47% from 20.7 million in 2000.
-- In the same period, married men in this age range dropped by 15%, from 18.1 million to 15.4 million. "Such men are more likely to be lonely, prone to deaths of despair and unhappy," according to Brad Wilcox, a University of Virginia sociologist.
-- Forty-two percent of working-class men are unmarried, according to educational psychologist Donna R. Turner. In 1980, 73% of working-class men were married.
I could go on and with these depressing statistics. But I believe the decline in marriage and children is a threat to the American future much more dangerous than even the national debt, climate change, cancer or foreign aggression.
Family is the essential organizing unit in America. We're not to live in Soviet-style communes where the authority figure is "Big Brother."
Every study shows that the decline in marriage among young men is tied to alcoholism, violent crime, drug abuse, pornography, depression, isolation, less economic success and suicide.
Are women to blame? Certainly. Study shows that as women have become more career oriented, they are having a harder time "marrying up."
Generation X and millennials have become choosier in finding a mate and more likely to have children alone, if they have them at all. "Women have less structural need for marriage than past generations did," said Angelica Gianchandani, a New York University finance instructor. "Rising income and education give many women a financial independence marriage once provided, and donor sperm and fertility treatment have decoupled motherhood from a partner altogether."
Women are much less likely to be religious today than in decades past. So holy matrimony is less of a lifetime priority or moral obligation.
We do know that when women raise children without a father in the home -- for whatever reason -- their kids, especially their sons, are less successful. It's a particular problem for Black women to find a suitable mate when so many young Black males are incarcerated.
I'm thrashing for explanations and solutions to this deeply troubling social trend. Obviously, we are not returning to the "Father Knows Best" norms of the 1950s or 1960s.
But recovery starts with admitting we have a problem. I would suggest that President Donald Trump announce a national bipartisan commission on "Rediscovering Love, Marriage and Parenthood."
One last stat to underscore the urgency of turning around these trends:
The latest Census Bureau data indicate that 47% of households were headed by married couples last year, down from 78.8% in 1949.
That trend MUST be reversed to advance America's economic prosperity and human happiness.

Yet another “ men bad for not signing up for a crap deal”
Never seen a “women need to learn skills to be a good mum and wife” article.
It ain’t men’s fault. They know a shit sandwich when they see one.
I don’t believe people should marry, especially men, unless they are totally committed...they don’t need children nor grandchildren...they can live free and purposeless lives and be perfectly happy and at least the rest of us won’t have to listen to endless pitching and moaning.
I outlived my first wife, our youngest was 12 when I became a widower. It worked out. My wife and I had built a family, progressed in our careers, we saved for the starter home and the moved up to the home we wanted. That marriage had meaning in our joint struggles and joys.
A few years later i remarried. It’s not the same or even similar. The point Im making is shared struggle is bonding. It’s not new to point out that the generation today of marriageable age seems risk averse or at least struggle averse. Marriage is a risk and a struggle at times. A couple has to be willing to struggle and, again, i dont see that in today’s young. But, Whats do I know?
That trend is not going to reverse with any well-thought policies or actions. It's way too late for that. The feminization of Western institutions is irreversible - at least by any actions within those institutions.
It will take a huge cultural shift to change this. That can happen only with a traumatic collapse of todays' systems and practices.
What comes afterwards is not predictable in much detail.
A horrid possibility is that maybe the Muslims got it right after all with their treatment of women. And the White Affluent Women Liberals (AWFLs) will be the first to make demands for the Women's Re-enslavement Movement.
Author Keith Laumer called it in one of his science-fiction novels 40 years ago.
It is abundantly clear to me that the feminization of society has ruined everything.
Men are not supposed to be men (because men are “toxic” and the “patriarchy” is bad).
Women can be non-traditional Girl Bosses and their emotions are the only thing that should ever matter.
It screwed up the workplace. Most businesses are insane and vicious today. Because of HR. Because of catty cliques. Because of political correctness. Women get put in charge and all of a sudden it’s about favoritism and not performance. Go woke, go broke? I say: Put women in charge and watch your business fail.
The courts don’t evaluate the law as much as they used to. Look at Lyndsay Clancy. That’s not really an anomaly. Women have feelings — screw the law, just impose a solution which feels right and which rights all the wrongs of the world.
Politics? The key issue is always murdering children. That’s what women want and it really dominates our politics. A great deal of Trump Derangement Syndrome really springs from the desire of women to murder children. Nothing else matters. MA Governor Maura Healey (a lesbian) recently signed a law to make abortion legal right up until birth. And this was followed by the Lyndsay Clancy trial in MA, which was basically abortion up to 5 years after birth.
Dating? Marriage? Divorce? It’s all a stacked deck. Women win. Men lose. The only way for a man to win is not to play.
We need to end the feminization of society.
This poor woman (an NPR employee) just died of cancer at 38:
https://www.npr.org/2026/09/18/nx-s1-5973098/rose-friedman-dies
She was a mother to 2 children. But she had these children by a PARTNER—not a husband!
I have known several women throughout my life who have had partners without marriage. Most did not become mothers, however.
It’s too bad that younger people are continuing this trend. No faith in God, either. Not so good!
It will take a war.
[[But marriage rates have plummeted, especially among young men.]]
Well i should hope so... Men should be marrying women!
All the institutions in the West are feminine except for certain obscure sects in Christianity, Orthodox Judaism and Islam.
AKA the "Fall of Rome" scenario.
It took decades of propaganda to get people to stop smoking
It will take decades to get women to act like marriage material (not that men are much better but I think they get bashed enough already)
Check out some break-up videos on Youtube. The Tinder app is the culprit.
How does that math work if it's not 1:1? Gay and single men are getting married less but lesbians are getting married at the previous levels or more?
Yeah, the Washington Slimes propaganda rag.
Do you remember the title of this novel?
