| Just so you know, my story was NOTHING compared to others who heard or saw what happened that day, but..... I was walking through the house while getting ready for work, when I glanced at the TV, which I don't usually watch. There was a view of the WTC with smoke pouring out the upper floors, and the reporter on Fox News was saying that a plane of some kind had hit the building. There was no panic, just reporting the incident and wondering how it happened and what kind of plane it was. While I stood there, the 2nd plane hit the other tower. My heart nearly stopped and of course, like everyone else, I KNEW that was no accident. I went on to work and everyone was scared and glued to the tiny TV we had in the back room of the store. I worked in the mall, and we finally closed at 1 PM and went home, because it was pretty much empty. Not only did I work in Bush's hometown but his mother-in-law still lived there, and we all feared that Midland, Texas, would be a prime target for people who hated the president. We also found out that the Pentagon had been hit and flight 93 had gone down in PA. For the rest of that day and the rest of the week, I, like the rest of the world, was glued to the TV set, my heart breaking. |

We are indebted to you for your sacrifices for our Freedom.

On that day I was working with a real estate company, and it was the day that we would take a tour of all the new listings. We drove to the first house, and the owners were glued to the TV watching the events in New York. We canceled the rest of the tour and returned to the office. Most everyone either went home to watch the day’s events or stayed in the office to do that.
I was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia and was off work that day. I’d gotten the kids off to school after watching a bit of the news. Then while I was reading my wife walked in a turned the TV back on just in time to see the second plane hit.
For a few hours I was glued to the news but finally had to get out of the house. Almost everything on base was shut down though. Traffic coming onto base was at a crawl due to the uptick of security.
That pretty much finished my transcription work for the day ... I was glued to Free Republic for the rest of the work day.
I was at work in the prison in Vacaville, CA. An inmate, whose son was an Air Force officer, came out of his cell, and told me about it.
I clearly remember where I was when I first heard of the WTC attack...just as I clearly remember how I first heard of JFK being shot (yah,I’m really old).

Greetings to all at the Canteen!
To all our military men and women, past and present,
THANK YOU
for your service!

Never Forget!

The morning was clear and cool—absolutely cloudless skies calling to mind the opening couplet of “The Ballad of Barbara Fritchey”
Up from the meadows rich with corn
Clear in the cool September morn’
The beauty was first shattered by a voice page from a parishioner concerning a child’s tragic death on an amusement ride at the York Fair the night before: “The ring bearer was killed, the Wedding is ruined, and N~ is hysterical”.
I knew that I would need to make copies of Thad Barnum’s essay on God’s presence in the midst of tragedy...and made sure that a master was with me.
I had no idea that many many more copies would be needed….

I was pumping gas at $1.43/gallon, and, as I pulled away from the pumps, I heard the breaking news of the first plane. I switched my car radio to KYW 1060, figuring that an all-news Philadelphia station would have better NYC coverage.
As I continued west (in those days I was a Lutheran Pastor, headed to my colleagues’ monthly meeting) I heard of the second plane.
That’s when we all KNEW. Say no more.

I took my kids off to elementary school, returned home, and after what seemed like a few minutes (probably a half hour), turned on my PC for the day’s news. Always on Free Republic to start. Pretty soon I heard about planes flying in to the Twin Towers. Ran to turn on the TV. I was glued. Called my husband at his office. No answer. Left a message to turn on the tv at work if they could find one.
When the Towers came down, I dropped to my knees and wept loudly. Ok. I am a woman. It hit me viscerally.
We had visited the WTC in July, 1993 after the first attack. I was shaking. I had been up there with my family. With my young children. They romped around the protective barriers as if those were monkey bars. So in 2001, it was very real to me. Who was up there? Were they tourists like we were?
It was hard when the kids got home from school early, and when my husband came home from work. Glued to the TV.
I still can hardly make sense of it 25 years later.
God bless all those who perished and their families. God bless the United States of America.
Thank you!
I was posting on FR that day. A news report that jet bombers had hit Taliban targets in Afghanistan generated expressions of joy from posters who thought the planes were part of a swift US retaliation, but it later turned out that the planes were flown by the Northern Alliance, Afghan rebels fighting the Taliban.
It hits me hard every single year.
