A Latino running group has been run out of a historically black Los Angeles neighborhood after opponents told organizers to find somewhere else to pound the pavement.
Barrio Athletics announced that its Sunday 5K moved from Leimert Park in Crenshaw to Elysian Park near Dodger Stadium following “careful conversation with community leaders.”
What started as a neighborhood dispute over the run quickly turned into showdown over who belongs in one of LA’s most important cultural enclaves.
Barrio Athletics had planned to meet at Leimert Park at 9 a.m. and run along Crenshaw Boulevard, but community members immediately objected, saying the event could disrupt a longstanding Sunday marketplace where black vendors make their living.
The backlash didn’t stop there, as critics accused the Latino run club of using the 5K to “scope out” the neighborhood amid fears of gentrification and displacement.
One user on social media described Leimert Park as “black space” and warned Barrio Athletics that its runners would be “met with resistance from the black community.”
She also characterized the event as a possible “hostile takeover” by the Hispanic community.
Barrio Athletics initially tried to avoid problems by saying it would move its warm-up and 5K starting point so it wouldn’t conflict with the marketplace.
The organization said the change was intended “to respect the local vendors’ space and not cause any disturbance to the market at the park.”
But that wasn’t enough for some opponents. Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, called on Mayor Karen Bass to intervene,b> declaring Leimert Park “the crown jewel and heart and soul of Black Los Angeles.”
Ultimately, Barrio Athletics decided to relocate the 5K.

Never went there, but “Crenshaw” was a no-go when I lived in west LA in the 60’s

Born in Atlanta but lived in Brooklyn and other regions of NY for years since age 4.
But now “Spike Lee resides in the Upper East Side of New York City, a neighborhood known for its luxurious residences and prestigious atmosphere. This area is synonymous with elegance and exclusivity, drawing many high-profile figures and celebrities.”
His old Forty Acres and a Mule was a studio he built in the abandoned Brooklyn firehouse on De Kalb Avenue—but he moved out and it was up for sale for $4.75 Million in 1985. Talk about gentrification.
Net worth about $50 Million in 2025.

DemocRATS love to divide, divide, divide. They just love finding more and more ways to divide us up, and then pit one group against another. They are, after all, the party of segregation and the KKK.
Stanford University, while touting and celebrating ‘diversity’ has developed segregated housing:
Ujamaa House is for African-Americans
Okada House is for Asians
Casa Zapata is for Chicanx and Latinx (99% of Spanish speakers do not like the new Latinx phraseology, and they do not speak Latin either).
The Stanford University website explains: “”Our ethnic theme communities have a rich and long history of engaging students at the highest levels of intellectual discovery and advancing diversity””
‘Advancing diversity’ by segregation. Sounds right out of 1984
Not disrupting the vendors at a long established street market is a legitimate concern. Those are extremely low margin businesses.
Racializing the issue is not legitimate.

“Historically black” = ghetto.
Leimert Park is near Baldwin Hills.
Back in the 1920s and 1930s, Baldwin Hills became known as "the Black Beverly Hills." It was where successful blacks lived, like that black actress who played the maid in Gone With the Wind.
This was because successful blacks couldn't move into many white neighborhoods, due to covenant deed restrictions. So they formed their own successful neighborhoods in Baldwin Hills and Leimert Park.
Baldwin Hills was sort of like Sugar Hill in Harlem, NYC. Where the successful blacks lived.
That was then. Baldwin Hills and Leimert Park were never really bad areas, but they lost some of their glory. And housing remained stubbornly cheaper there, than in the rest of western Los Angeles, due their large black populations.
Then in the last 10 to 15 years, they began to gentrify. Young white (and Asian, and Latino) couples buying houses there, because those neighborhoods are some of the last "affordable" pockets in western Los Angeles.
