Saturday Evening Post will stop printing after 205 years
Seattle Times ^ | September 2, 2026 | Benjamin Mullen

For more than two centuries, The Saturday Evening Post has chronicled American life in its pages, enshrining a homespun national identity and printing some of the nation’s greatest writers.

That’s changing next year.

The magazine’s January issue will be its last in print, according to Joan SerVaas, the president and publisher. In a letter to the Post’s 50,000 subscribers in the most recent issue, she attributed the decision to a combination of “rising production costs, declining advertising revenue and shifting reader habits.”

“We’ve been dealing with it for over a decade,” SerVaas said in an interview. “We continued hoping it would turn around or life would get better. Now we’re pretty sure it’s not going to get any better.”

The magazine, which debuted in 1821, will continue to publish new articles and fiction online.

SerVaas said she had decided to end the print edition because it was a financial drain on the Saturday Evening Post Society, which owns the Post. The archives, which will be preserved online contain news articles as well as poetry, fiction and art, including iconic images by Norman Rockwell.

Though many magazines have been depleted by the nosedive in print advertising, the Post has fallen from particularly stratospheric heights.

Patton would be happy:

"The bilious bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the Saturday Evening Post don't know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating."

I haven’t seen it in years and thought it was long gone. It used to be available at newsstands, pharmacies, etc.

That’s true. I was at the mechanic yesterday and all they had were copies of something like “Auto Repair Shop Monthly.”

Covid played a big part with that. Can’t have anyone breathing on a magazine, then passing it along to the next person.

Covid sped up the process, but most people ate looking at their phones. CNN dropped their airport broadcasts for the same reason: nobody, not even liberals, were watching them.

The name “Saturday Evening Post” rang a bell. Then it hit me. They published many of Norman Rockwell‘s works. I don’t think Rockwell missed the mark, even once.

Here’s just one example. Look closely at what’s going on at the table. Consider also the man on the left.

“Doctor and dentists waiting rooms don’t even have magazines any more”

is that because all the old ones finally wore out?

If a business with a waiting room wanted a paper magazine, Comic Books are still popular, but the most common ones today are extremely violent or adult themed. Not appropriate for lowering anybody’s blood pressure.
