For most of human history, the rich were well-fed and rarely worked whereas the poor were often overworked and underfed. Yet in 21st century America, many of our poorest citizens resemble the rich of the past because they rarely work and suffer from the ‘Diseases of Affluence’ — obesity and diabetes (Fig. 1). This unprecedented reversal in the relation between labor, diet, and disease is an unintended consequence of America’s ‘War on Poverty’.
When our nation’s poor were overworked and underfed, it was sound public health policy — morally, physiologically, and economically — to provide food and material support. However, as my research shows ... giving ‘free food’ to non-working (sedentary) people is not only an exercise in misplaced empathy but an unmitigated public health disaster.
By not understanding the causal relations between physical activity, diet, and metabolic health, the US government spent trillions of dollars over the past 50 years causing cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in our poorest citizens — and will spend many trillions more treating these diseases with pharmaceuticals like GLP-1s.
Accordingly, in this essay, I present evidence from epidemiology, economics, physiology, nutrition, and ethics to show that ending ‘Food Stamps’ (the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; SNAP) and instituting work requirements for able-bodied recipients of public support will improve the health of our poor — and the moral and economic health of our nation.
The Epidemiology of an Economic Collapse: ‘Moving more & Eating less’
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 reduced Cuban foreign trade by 80 percent. ...
This natural experiment in ‘moving more & eating less’ caused reductions in diabetes mortality by 51 percent, ischemic heart disease by 35 percent, stroke by 20 percent, all-cause mortality by 18 percent — and reduced the prevalence of obesity by 50 percent. …

Makes people lazy ?
Yes Professor Dutton has several videos on it…YouTube.
Before the Industrial Revolution well off and educated people had 2x the rate of reproduction than poor, uneducated.
Today’s it’s literally reversed due to welfare and better opportunity.
Idiocracy was more than a silly comedy.
I wish the republicans would abolish something.
Just something. Anything.
It’s so bad.... it’s so sad..... the republicans couldn’t even abolish the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The CPB effectively abolished itself temporarily.
That’s how sad these elected losers are. They just are not conservative. They’re non-conservatives/ republicans only.
“However, as my research shows ... giving ‘free food’ to non-working (sedentary) people is not only an exercise in misplaced empathy but an unmitigated public health disaster.”
What I call “pathological compassion” The type of compassion that ruins the receiver as well as the giver... and society in general.
And welfare is even worse because it’s now seen as a right.
As Benjamin Franklin put it, “The best way to help the poor is to make them uncomfortable in their own poverty.”
We’ve made it way too comfortable.
That was by design.
Maybe the system can’t work, it must be changed.
Nobody is hungry in America who isn’t in the care of a drug addled parent. The food “charities” excluding the religious affiliated are countless. I don’t believe their actual motivation is hunger. They set themselves up as a non profit then they start sucking up tax money. The churches could handle any REAL hunger that actually exists. But as long as you’re giving away free food or free anything for that matter you’ll be mobbed with takers. It’s LITERALLY a scam all around.
The food stamp system is working exactly as politicians want it to.
That’s why it needs to be abolished.
2 Thessalonians 3:10
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you: that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
They can’t even prohibit unhealthy junk food without some thug in a black robe blocking it.
Food “stamps”, what a joke. They get credit cards!!!
If up to me then be given food bricks. More incentive to be productive that way.
Better just to get the government out of the charity business.

Illegal immigration is a good start.
And eat crappy garbage items.
I am the recipient of food stamps, about 110 a month. It helps immensely. I am 73 years old, 9 years into Cancer treatment and eat mostly protein, yogurt, and vegetables. Without these, I would be close to starvation levels of nutrition. I pay $900 for rent, utilities and garbage pickup. Leaving me with $400 to pay for medical treatment bills, travel, phone is $26 for minimum data, and internet at $75 to service streaming and phone service. I have lost 52 lbs from my weight of 10 years ago, and anymore threatens life. IDK how many are like me, but food banks are full of carbs, not proteins. What is a gift to some, is poison to me. Oh, and my regular SS is just short of $1400 per. I thank the US govt for this gift of DSHS, but they need stricter regulations. ADHD, obesity, PTSD from other than military service or police is a joke. Cut off the fat, sterilize the single mothers without a Husband, give them a choice of sterilization, or no Social services. I am the Father of 5 Children who are fully self sufficient and married, with their own children. Screw the playas and the Hoes along with the non citizens.
