Vice President J.D. Vance on Monday called Canada a “state,” before claiming it was an accident.
“We have to remember, Canada is a state—sorry, Freudian slip,” Vance said during a political event in Maine, after being asked about the recent heated trade talks between the U.S. and its northern neighbor. “That was actually an accident.”
He went on to say that “Canada is a country that has underinvested in its military that quite literally would get invaded by a foreign country were it not for the umbrella of protection provided by the United States of America.”
Vance’s slip-up comes after President Donald Trump has hurled a number of barbs at Canada and its political leaders since he took office for a second term. The President has repeatedly referred to Canada as the “51st state,” suggesting that the U.S. should annex its northern neighbor. In March, Trump called Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney the “future Governor of Canada.”
Carney has repeatedly and firmly pushed back on Trump’s comments; last year, the Canadian Prime Minister said of the suggestion of annexing Canada: “As I’ve said to anyone who’s raised this issue in private or in public, including the President, it will never happen.”
When TIME asked Trump last year whether he was “trolling a little bit” when he speaks about making Canada a U.S. state, Trump replied, “Actually, no, I’m not.”

It is impossible for me to see how alienating our peaceful neighbor to the North does anything at all to Make America Great Again. When our nation acts like this, we look like a bully filled with pride and hubris.
There was a time when we knew how to use soft power, as well as quiet hard power. New York is not the world, or even the USA, and manners still count as a sign of character and decency.

Trump didn't want us to remain in NAFTA because we didn't benefit from the trade agreement.
It is easier to pursue bilateral trade agreements with Mexico and Canada.
If Canada were to become a state, Alaska would have to change its nickname, The Big State, because Canada is much bigger.

Its not a European nation, some of them have militaries that are barely a police force and none with any real ability to project power, certainly no effective logistics and transport by themselves or as a group. Russia is kind of tied up right now.

The only nation with heavy lift that could theoretically project any power on earth other than ourselves is China. Trump has repeatedly warned us about their intents and has actually called them out during his discussions on Greenland and China has started calling itself a “near arctic nation” saying that it has a claim on any oil and minerals beneath the north pole.
Only one capable, only one we were seriously warned about trying to make a claim, only one making any aggressive move even if it is primarily verbal at this time. Lets remember also that the leadership in Canada was at one point making deals that would have invited those same people in to effectively take over Canada.

No kidding. Carney is the one trying to bring in all the cheap Chicom subsidized flame-mobile Chicom electric cars which are manufactured not to make a profit but flood foreign markets and harm the importing country’s auto industry.
Canada isn’t our friend. They are China’s friend.
