A top US general in Europe abruptly removed from command

One of the Pentagon's top generals overseeing military operations in Europe has been removed from command, the Army confirmed Friday, nearly two months before his time on the job would have naturally wrapped up.

Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, commander of the Army’s V Corps, was removed from command in recent days, according to a service spokesperson, though the circumstances surrounding his removal remain unclear.

Costanza's removal comes amid a broader shake-up of the military's senior ranks, with more than two dozen high-ranking officers removed or sidelined under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, often without public explanation. But a source familiar with Costanza's removal said it was unrelated to Hegseth's broader effort to reshape the military's top leadership and not due to any political implications.

Costanza’s replacement, Maj. Gen. Thomas Feltey, had previously been Senate-confirmed for that leadership handoff already scheduled for October.

V Corps is responsible for overseeing U.S. Army forces and coordinating operations across Europe. Partially based in Poland, the corps has taken on an increasingly prominent role since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, helping coordinate U.S. support for Kyiv and managing the American military footprint along NATO's frontlines.

The Pentagon has downsized the U.S. military footprint in Europe this year, most notably with the abrupt cancellation of a planned deployment of the Army’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, to Poland.

President Donald Trump later announced the U.S. was going to position 5,000 troops in Poland after the brigade's removal drew criticism in Warsaw.

Guess it's not the ‘summer of George”... Maybe he can get his job as an “architect” back?

“... helping coordinate U.S. support for Kyiv...”

Too much or not enough?

He was ready to move on shortly and thought he could wait his time doing whatever he wanted. He thought poorly.

he must have done something (??) to really ire the Boss?

Part of the problem is surely that Obama-Biden and maybe Bush. too, left us with a military very topheavy with flag officers. The less stellar are being pruned. Over weight with generals seems to breed some ossification and passive aggression in the top ranks. It hurts most in the pentagon where things don’t get done because there are too many bosses and things don’t get done.

Probably, the rats had control of our military 12 of the 18 years. There are Nancy boys sprinkled throughout.

It was happening 50 years ago when I was in.

Our company commander a captain was having an affair with the company first sergeant’s wife. Then one morning they both were both gone and we never saw them again......

We had a Battalion Commander relieved in Germany back in the late 70s. Commanding General’s office called and said for him to meet the CG on the helipad in x amount of minutes, they met, we never saw him again.
