Governor Gavin Newsom announced Friday that California’s statewide minimum wage will increase to $17.40 per hour beginning January 1, 2027.
The rate is higher than any current statewide minimum wage in the nation and nearly two-and-a-half times the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.
The increase is already automatic under California law, which adjusts the minimum wage annually to keep pace with inflation.
Newsom, who is expected to run for president in 2028, contrasted himself against President Trump in announcing the increase.
“For years, Donald Trump and Republicans have blocked efforts to raise the federal minimum wage while handing tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations,” the governor said in a statement.
“California has chosen a different path — one that rewards work, grows the economy, and puts working families first. We believe if you work hard, you deserve a decent paycheck. They think $7.25 an hour is enough. We don’t.”
Scott Meyers, who is running for Congress, told The Post, “Governor Gavin Newsom pointlessly references the low federal minimum wage in an effort to display his own virtue of raising our minimum wage to $17.40.
He cleverly omits that the federal minimum wage has zero relevance in the state of California. Moreover, from Taco Bell, all the way up to Whole Foods, businesses will adjust and have customers interact increasingly with self service checkouts as they have already done. The more the minimum wage is, the less entry-level employees there will be. This helps nobody. It actually harms. Gavin knows this.”
Many California healthcare workers already saw another scheduled increase on July 1, pushing minimum wages to between $19.28 and $25 an hour depending on the type of facility.

California wages are a reality heck they pay people over 19 dollars an hour or more to push carts at Walmart.
Who cares if businesses can’t afford it
And everyone making minimum wage gets a wheelbarrow to haul their money around just to go shopping.
A high minimum wage is to incentivize employers to hire illegal aliens under the table.
Come on, Gavin. $17.40 per hour isn't a decent paycheck. Raise it to $100 per hour. Then everyone will be rich and poverty will disappear!!!
I honestly don’t understand why they just don’t mandate everyone get 1 billion dollars, so we are all rich, it fits perfectly well within their illogic.
As businesses close and workers laid off.
Not to mention a loaf of bread costing $25. All costs translate downhill to consumers just like crap in an outhouse.
“The rate is higher than any current statewide minimum wage in the nation and nearly two-and-a-half times the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.”
In Washington State the current minimum wage is $17.13 an hour, but in King County it is $20.82, and in Seattle it is $21.30 an hour. So, although this is shocking to people who do not live on the Left Coast... the Democrats here have been pulling this crap for a long time.
As Rush Limbaugh used to say: Why not make minimum wage 100 dollars an hour?
He used absurdity to explain the absurd.
Right - you should read about all the businesses that have closed and corporations heading out to like TX .... I guess illegals have to pay for illegals now.
Government signals to its mercenaries that the US border is open. Millions invade. Inflation ensues.
Government prints money to raise its employees’ minimum wage.
Private enterprise is bankrupted.
Communism is established.
That’s the plan.
They will drive inflation out the ass if they do. Probably that is the plan.
The more you hike minimum wake rate, the more part time jobs and jobless are created. This is an election year stunt.
Just wondering........how much per hour does Newsom make?
Anybody ever figure it out?
They will try price fixing too just like the playbook says. I hope Kali suffers, they kill everything they touch.
The minimum wage should be set at $0.00 per hour, and increased in steps as the new worker learns the discipline of skills and responsibility. Starting wage was never meant to be a living wage, it should be treated as a stipend to get the new worker accustomed to being on time and actively paying attention to the demands of the position.
Within a period of a couple years, the new recruit to the job market may have attained the necessary experience to successfully begin the climb to the level of capability. Or at the least, developed the skill set to self-employ, either as a day laborer or as an entrepreneur.
Formal education, as now set up, does NOT teach the basics of earning a living and filling a productive position in society. In fact, quite the opposite, the person who has educated themself into middle age still has no idea how to MAKE a living, as they have relied on the largesse of another to supply a stipend while they “studied” some facet or another of life, but never actually applied what they had in their store of knowledge.
At some point you have to ask yourself what poor life choices resulted in you not having any marketable skills, forcing you to live on Minimum Wage which was designed for High School kids entering the workforce for the first time? You whine about Wage Equality while never once considering Equality of Effort.
Whatever the arguments for or against minimum wage laws, I don't see how anyone can live a decent life in Los Angeles on that. You'll either need roommates, or live at home with your parents, or be part of a multi-income family.
