Spitting Attacks Show Rise of Anti-Christian Hate in Israel
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Aug. 2, 2026 12:24 pm ET | Margherita Stancati

JERUSALEM—In Jerusalem’s Old City, a group of Israeli teenagers recently banged on the door of the headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church and asked if there were Christians inside it. They wanted to spit at them.

The boys said it was a religious duty, or mitzvah, to humiliate Christians, or, as they called them, idol worshipers. “We are supposed to hate them,” explained one teen, wrapped in an Israeli flag.

They were among the thousands of mostly young Israelis who on that May afternoon marched through the historic Old City for a national celebration that marks the capture of East Jerusalem in 1967. It is an annual show of force that the area’s mostly Palestinian residents find provocative.

On that recent afternoon, there were at least a dozen spitting incidents near the Armenian church alone, according to security-camera footage, witnesses and a Wall Street Journal reporter on the scene.

Incidents of anti-Christian hate, once sporadic, are becoming routine in Jerusalem, a city held sacred in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Most Israelis condemn this behavior, but negative attitudes toward Christianity have become more common, particularly among young people, surveys show.

The incidents are embarrassing for Israel’s right-wing government, which says it is committed to upholding religious freedom in a region where discrimination is common. The government has appointed a new Arab Christian ambassador to help smooth relations with Christian communities, but critics say it isn’t doing enough.

“This is the reality: Whomever is a Christian—visibly a Christian—is becoming a target,” said Yisca Harani, an Israeli scholar who monitors anti-Christian hatred. “There are a growing number of religious Jews who do this, and it is not being taken seriously by Israeli authorities. They are turning a blind eye, and that is an encouragement.”

NO ONE gets more grief in Israel than Messianic Jews, and no one brings more financial relief to Israel than Messianic Jews. They are blinded by the view that has been put upon others , but that view is being lifted.

Very interesting. While Christians defend Jews every day of the week.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out

Not a good way to influence and win friends.

Aren’t there only ~16 million
Jews on da Erf?

They need to be careful about being intolerant of others.....

there are always a few delinquent teen-agers

when they do bad stuff like this in Jerusalem or any other part of Israel, they are pretty swiftly punished (or even arrested, depending on the circumstances and their ages)

none of this is newsworthy in Israel or America or anywhere else

the newsworthy part of this article is that the WSJ editors let it slip into print

ps: Israel works very hard to defend Christians, the serious error Israel made was to give away Bethleham to the Fakestinian Moslem terrorist murder gangsters (PLO, Abbas himself being a mass-murderer). That led to almost all the Christians moving into the parts of Israel that the government retained (a couple kilometers at most distance) or elsewhere, for their safety. The only Christians left in Bethleham are the minimal number required to operate the tourist attractions. The situation is generally very bad for the few Christians still living in the other Fakestinian-PLO-controlled areas, too. This problem is being corrected as Isarel reclaims its land (Judea/Samaria) and Christians will find it to be pretty safe again... indeed, Israel is the ONLY country in the middle east where Christians are safe to make their lives (Egypt has several million Coptic Christians and they’re not being attacked like they were in Syria, Leganon, Iraq... but their situation in that country is nevertheless not pleasant and the government only goes so far in protecting them...)

The REAL story is what’s happening to the Christians in many European countries as the Moslem invaders are burning lots of cars, attacking a lot of Christians and Jews on the streets, etcetera. Especially concerning are countries like France, Spain, UK, Belgium...

Jewish arrogance is showing. Being the “Chosen People” as gotten to them. Christians preach humility and turn the other cheek. This doesn’t bode well. Jews need all the friends they can get.

Amb Huckabee has called them out.

They need a more stern warning, from leaders.

Not that WSJ wouldn’t add embellishment to a story.

I don’t doubt that the story is true.

But here’s the thing. I worked for a number of years (full-time) for an ultra-orthodox Jewish organization. And I am a Christian. That was obvious.

I was always treated with respect. Never once did I experience anything negative from anyone. Not from the youngest people in the community. And not from the oldest.

My point: Every group has its outliers. The trick is in separate what the outliers think from what the rest think.

Early this year there were reports of IDF soldiers destroying Christian statues.

Total fabrication.
Israeli teens don’t wander the streets in the Old City.
These are Palestinian teens and they DO wonder the streets going after tourists.
Happened to me three times. Once in Haifa and the other two times in Jerusalem.

Yes, this is a bad and stupid thing to do. The kids doing it should be disciplined and taught never to do it again.

However, it pales in comparison to what Muslims do to those they hate.

There are pro-Pali woke leftists there trying to foment anger and divide Christians and Jews.
They’re everywhere in Europe and the ME.

Christianity is Jewish. Paul says that Christians should pay for the salvation of Israel.

The best thing that could happen is that all Jews and Muslims would become Christians.

Jews are waiting for a Messiah who already came.

Muslims believe Jesus is the Messiah, but not the Son of God.

It would be funny if not so tragic.
