Inside Aceh's brutal public canings where gleeful crowds watch men and women being whipped until they pass out under Sharia law punishment for sex outside marriage and gambling

An unconscious woman lies motionless on the floor while medics gather around her contorted body.

The 25-year-old has just been brutally whipped 21 times in public after an Indonesian court found her guilty of violating Islamic law by kissing her partner during a TikTok live-stream.

The act may seem like an innocent exchange between a couple in love, but in Aceh – the only province in the South-East Asian country that applies a version of Sharia Law – it is met with severe punishment.

The woman – who was pictured wincing in agony as she was lashed repeatedly – is one of the latest victims of the province's brutal public whippings, in which hooded guards cane convicts in front of dozens of people until they pass out.

Ruthless officers, also known as 'algojos', use rattan sticks to flog them in front of Islamic court officials and curious onlookers in a gruesome spectacle condemned by human rights groups.

Dressed in dark robes that shroud them from head to toe, and their faces concealed by cloaks to maintain anonymity, the algojos are there to inflict pain with every strike.

Under Sharia Law, people can receive up to 100 lashes for morality offences including adultery and gay sex.

Caning is also exercised to punish people for gambling and drinking, and for women who wear tight clothes or men who skip Friday prayers.

Looked up Aceh

Seems an airline ticket is over $9,000 to get there
from the Midwest

Guess I’ll skip my vacation there

Plus I’m over $9,000 short so....

Sounds like a fun place

As I was remembering

On 26 December 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7), a Mw 9.2–9.3 earthquake struck with its epicenter off the west coast of Aceh, in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The undersea megathrust earthquake, known in the scientific community as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, was caused by a rupture along the fault boundary between the Burma plate and the Indian plate, and reached a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX in some areas.

You are talking about men who believe having sex with little boys is perfectly acceptable and doesn’t mean they are gay.

Jesus: "He who is without sin cast the first stone."

The difference between Islam and Christianity is clear. Christ teaches forgiveness. Mohamed teaches killing. Killing is the nature of their religion.

The example of Mohamed on forgiveness Sahih Muslim, Book 17: 4206

There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a woman from Ghamid and said: Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery, so purify me. He (the Holy Prophet) turned her away. On the following day she said: Allah's Messenger, Why do you turn me away? Perhaps, you turn me away as you turned away Ma'iz. By Allah, I have become pregnant. He said: Well, if you insist upon it, then go away until you give birth to (the child). When she was delivered she came with the child (wrapped) in a rag and said: Here is the child whom I have given birth to. He said: Go away and suckle him until you wean him. When she had weaned him, she came to him (the Holy Prophet) with the child who was holding a piece of bread in his hand. She said: Allah's Apostle, here is he as I have weaned him and he eats food. He (the Holy Prophet) entrusted the child to one of the Muslims and then pronounced punishment. And she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her. Khalid b Walid came forward with a stone which he flung at her head and there spurted blood on the face of Khalid and so he abused her. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) heard his (Khalid's) curse that he had hurried upon her. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Khalid, be gentle. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, he prayed over her and she was buried.

The example of Jesus on forgiveness (John 8:1-11)

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?" They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more."

Call me sceptical, but I don’t see any of the canings at that link to be as severe as they make it out to be.

I always found it curious that in both cases the man wasn’t mentioned for any punishment, only the woman.

But I thought all cultures were equal, and Americans or Brits condemning someone else’s culture was white privilege.

Progressive thought is so confusing!
