‘Climate change kills’: Pedro Sánchez speaks plain truth to Spain’s deniers
The Guardian ^ | August 2, 2026 | Sam Jones

Just over four years ago, Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, visited a small town in the south-western region of Extremadura that had been affected by one of the wildfires devouring tens of thousands of hectares of land across the country.

That summer’s blazes had left two people dead in the northern region of Castilla y León and another man there fatally burned after the excavator he was using to try to dig a firebreak to protect his town was swallowed up by the flames. A street-sweeper in Madrid had collapsed and died from heatstroke while on shift in soaring temperatures that summer. The paramedics who tried to save him noted that his body temperature was 41.6C (107F).

“I want to make something very clear,” the prime minister told reporters in Extremadura that day in 2022. “Climate change kills: it kills people, as we’ve seen; it also kills our ecosystem, our biodiversity, and it also destroys the things we as a society hold dear – our houses, our businesses, our livestock.”

Earlier this week – amid wildfires that have consumed more than 180,000 hectares (428,915 acres) of land in the first seven months of 2026 – he repeated the same blunt warning.

“The climate emergency kills,” he said on Monday. “And that’s why it’s not enough to address the consequences, which we do; what we have to do is reduce its causes, anticipate its effects, and, consequently, better prepare our country to protect people’s lives.”

Just as he has been one of the most vociferous European leaders when it comes to criticising Israel’s conduct in Gaza and Donald Trump’s war in Iran - and defending the benefits of immigration – so Sánchez has long deployed unvarnished language to raise awareness of the climate emergency.

So, science say, “two weeks to flatten the curve” also wants me to believe in global warming.

“”The south-western region of Extremadura””

I went to college in Spain in 1978.

The area Extremadura has an age-old saying about the yearly frackin’ hot weather:

Tres meses de Invierno, y nueve meses de Infierno.

Three months of winter, and nine months of hell.

That's funny right there. Too true. Global warming, global cooling, pandemic. It can be cured with more taxes. Peasant.

Just wait until the hoards begin burning structures within Madrid then the fires outside the cities will join up with the immigrant anger and Spain will once again fall under the Sword of Islam.

His brother was convicted in a nepotism case of administrative misconduct for collaborating to get a government job created for himself that hadn't existed before. He was banned from holding public office for nine years.

Spanish PM Sánchez’s brother convicted in nepotism case

In June this year, close aide José Luis Abalos, a former transport minister and a key figure in Sánchez’s rise to power in 2018, was convicted for his role in a pandemic-era contracts scheme. The Supreme Court found him guilty of membership in a criminal organization, bribery, embezzlement of public funds, and influence peddling. Prosecutors alleged he and his associates pocketed kickbacks for awarding public contracts worth millions of euros for sanitary equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic, favoring businessman Victor de Aldama, who admitted his role in the scheme. Abalos was given a 24 year sentence.

2. Warmer weather is not a problem.
3. More arable land is not a problem.
4. Longer growing seasons is not a problem.
5. CO2 greening of the earth is not a problem.
6. There isn't any Climate Emergency
