EXCLUSIVE: Encampment could cost city ‘hundreds of thousands of dollars,’ mayor says(Madison, WI Still Under Siege)

MADISON, Wis. — The encampment at the site where a Madison police officer shot and killed a man could cost the city “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway told News 3 Now on Friday.

The encampment at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets was erected late last week in response to the killing of Corey Ruiz. Police said Ruiz was seen “checking vehicles” before his encounter with police and used a knife to injure one of the officers detaining him before the shooting.

The City of Madison has provided some resources to keep the protest area safe, including salt trucks parked in front of makeshift barricades. Speaking to News 3 Now, Rhodes-Conway said the trucks were put in place to prevent vehicles from crashing through the barricades and injuring people.

“Normally when we would have a protest, or something like this, we would have [police] squad cars down to make sure people were staying safe,” Rhodes-Conway said. “Given the sensitivity of this moment, we’ve chosen to use other city staff and vehicles to do that.”

But utilizing city resources that way can only go on for so long. And for some in the area, the encampment is taking a toll on their patience.

Rhodes-Conway issued a statement Thursday calling the encampment neither sustainable nor safe. She said residents in the Marquette neighborhood had reached out to her office with concerns about being unable to sleep, conduct business or safely be in the area.

The city is also racking up a massive bill, mostly on overtime and staffing costs, that could have impacts further down the line.

“I would expect just roughly that we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Rhodes-Conway said. She could not provide an exact number on Friday, but said the total would depend on how long the encampment remains up.

She said that the city could be forced to amend its budget due to the spending, but could not yet say what other areas would miss out on funding because of the changes.

Madison’s budget is already in a tight spot. The city is already projecting an $11 million gap in its 2027 operating budget, and last month Rhodes-Conway directed all city agencies to cut their budgets by 2%.

My interview question for Her Honor: Ms. Mayor. Your party ENCOURAGES Civil Unrest and doesn't do a thing to stop it when it blows up in your faces. And yet, you fail to BUDGET for this? What gives? *SMIRK*

So the [repeat-offender] perp knifes a cop and everyone is “outraged” when he is shot & killed?

Madison deserves everything it gets.

“Madison deserves everything it gets.”

The public there asks for it. I hope they burn it to the ground.

Think of the savings for the local legal system.

I guess I am not understanding all this extra cost to the city. Is it because a criminal was shot because he was caught in the act? Or is it because of a local protest of this action? Sounded like a legal shoot to me.

I believe these officials will demand funds from state and federal governments to fill the budget gap. I only wish there were some way to insulate Taxpayers from such idiocy. Then I couldn’t care less about the voters that made these bad choices.

... residents in the Marquette neighborhood had reached out to her office with concerns...

This area, and the area of the encampment, are hardcore Marxists. These people are the lesbian, Marxist mayor's political base. Without a doubt, and at minimum, these residents are sympathetic to the takeover. They just don't like the inconvenience of it.

Mark my words, the way they'll pay for this is by raising property taxes again... but only after the school district gets another huge property tax increase, "for the children".

I suppose the idea of having the cops clear the area rather than parking salt trucks to reinforce the protestors’ barricades never occurred to the mayor.

You get what you approve of and allow. Allow this type of crap and behavior and expect the sh*t that comes with it.

I repeat again for all the commies coming to this site: show me ONE stinking communist nation, the Soviet Union in Russia and the Eastern Bloc nations, Red China, Red North Korea, Red Cuba, Red Venezuela, El Salvador, and let's not forget the National Peoples Socialist Party of Nazi Germany- that was a positive for the people of those nations? One, just one!!!

All these nations combined are responsible for over 120 MILLION deaths and murders. Mao, Stalin, Uncle Adolph, Fidel, the Kims, Putin, all socialist or communist. You will get what you yearn for. When they come in charge, you go into the garbage bin of history. YOU are the sheep! They are the wolves!!

not if she had the balls to send in the scoops or fire hoses or whatever and send the miscreants packing, but looks like she’s a weak witless fool that just likes to wring her hands and clutch her pearls ... though, looks to me like the voters who elected her deserve to get what they voted for, good and hard ...

(libspeak)

Why didn't the police just shoot the knife out of his hand?

Stupid is as stupid does. It costs taxpayers, not the “city”.

It is incumbent on the city to break up unlawful assemblies. They setup unlawful roadblocks, mayor needs to crack open some heads until they figure it out. Stay the hell out of the road. This here is what you get with incompetent “leaders”.

Notice she mentions illegal roadblocks or checkpoints and “safety” in the same breath. She might be a mental case or retarded or whatever they call it these days.
