Zohran, Tribune of the People, has at last unveiled his plan for government-owned grocery stores. The mountain has labored, and here is your mouse. At first glance, it appears to be a display program, something that will enable Mamdani to claim that he carried out his campaign promise without putting himself at political risk. Five stores scattered across the same number of boroughs, each with over a million inhabitants, is not very impressive. But whatever number -- five, five hundred, or five thousand -- the scheme suffers from a crippling flaw that has been overlooked.
Ya see, New Yawk is right next to Joisey. Yeah okay, there’s some water there, but they got tunnels that go right under it straight to Manhattan. So it’s like ten minutes away, tops. I mean, even Queens and Brooklyn, they ain’t more than like a half-hour, forty minutes away, right? So, Joisey being right next door, and everybody in the state thinking they’re in the Sopranos, what do ya think’s gonna happen?
Well, I’ll tell ya, playmates. Mamdani has stated that prices in the new city-owned people’s stores will be 30% under those of chain supermarkets. That is, chain supermarkets not only in NYC, but New Jersey, Connecticut, and elsewhere.
So those new Workers’ and Peasants’ Superstores will scarcely have opened their doors when they will be overwhelmed with nonresidents in the style of the locusts of scripture. And it won’t just be penny-pinching everyday Jerseyans. No -- it will be restaurateurs seeking cheap supplies and, NJ being ground zero for gray-market goods, store owners buying mounds of stuff to mark up and sell at full price in their own trans-Hudson stores. Within minutes, Zohranmarts will be cleaned out, with little of it going to locals, while Holland and Lincoln tunnels are jammed…

According to the New York Post, the city is planning to make an East Harlem location the first store at a cost of $30 million. It will be located in La Marqueta near Park Avenue and may not actually open until 2029.
How will they deal with the rampant shoplifting and theft which will take place there?

But this time it will work b/c the right people are in charge, right Mamdani and New Yorkers who voted for him?
There is a method to this madness. I believe the long term plan is for the city to DOMINATE the groceries courtesy of tax payer money.
Just ask yourself if you’re a grocery operator…how are the competitors going to match it? Who can compete with artificially cheaper or even ‘free’?
Odds are good that New York’s corner bodegas will watch their margins fall and lose massive amounts of business to the cheaper government groceries, as if the introduction of big box retailers, which already happened, didn’t squeeze them enough.
If the government competitor can cut the price of groceries 30 percent or more, they will have to do the same, and that means they’ll lose money, given that grocery margins are always narrow, single-digit affairs. And unlike the big government competitor, they’ll still have to pay taxes, permits, rent and other operating costs, which will shrink their margins further.
Many will Go Galt, or take their operations to other cities or even homelands such as the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, where the business climate is not hostile. In the end, the government behemoth will be the only show in town.
AND *THAT* IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF COMMIE MAMDANI!
The new stores will close in one month because everything will get stolen as soon as it gets on the shelf.

Rather than ration cards, just limit the payment option to food stamps. No credit cards, no debit cards, and most importantly, no cash.
I am sure the commie with the mommie has thought of that. City store can limit customers the way costco does only use address instead of membership. Problem might arise if he follows through on plan to franchise out the actual operation to a grocer or chain. Then lawsuits develop as City is openly taking sides in competition. Using taxpayer dollars to give a grocer the advantage of lower pricing as the city will return the 30% lost to the grocer.

I’m up pretty early anyway. I can go to NY, get as much as I can at discount, and sell it on the street at a bit less that full price to make my toll and parking money back and more.
As the article states… What’s to stop residents from New Jersey and Connecticut from shopping in those stores, too? New York City could end up subsidizing the entire region with cheap groceries, wreaking havoc its own finances and the economic ecosystems of those other states, too,, and it’s likely shortages will follow, unless, of course, they initiate a system of strict government-issued ID and rationing.
Here’s another problem: Who’s going to stop people from getting into line early in the morning, buying up the entire cut-rate supply, and re-selling it at a profit that still undercuts existing grocers? That always happens, and will happen again once this bad idea is put into place.
And the problems will pile on …a large percentage of New Yorkers take SNAP benefits. Why would cut-rate groceries be anything useful for them, other than for reselling purposes? They already get what they need for free.

He also recently threatened homeowners in New York City with second homes with exorbitant taxes.
What’s to stop someone from buying up the goods at these government-run grocery stores - and selling it for a profit right in front of the store? How soon will the government grocery stores run out of merchandise? - faster than they can re-stock - so they’ll have to start rationing.
Some people have to learn the hard way. No sympathy for anyone who voted for Mamdani - they are about to get a good lesson in Econ 101 - the non-Marxist version, that is. Mamdani clearly stated what he was before and during his campaign - so no surprises there, his goal is to “control the means of production” - straight out of the Commie handbook.

There’s a couple of YouTube videos about the Sun Fresh Market in KC.
First one is a local news station touting the benefits of it when it was just opening.....second one is a follow-up by the same tv station a year later, and sure enough, empty shelves and about go belly up from theft.....and a certain ethnicity complaining that someone needed to do something about it.
Same thing will happen in nyc......insanity truly is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.

I think the food should be absolutely free to the needy people in New York. Somewhat better prices and shoddy reshelving can only enrage the populace after the long delay in the stores being opened.
So socialism now is just a watered down version of the discount big box store trend in capitalism.
