President Donald Trump on Tuesday publicly invited a 16-year-old Santa Cruz lifeguard to the White House, days after the teen saved a young boy's life from intense waves caught on camera and witnessed around the world.

He'll make a great Marine some day.
Maybe USCG rescue swimmer.
wow, big waves. intense.
He’s only 16. Not sure what the age requirement is for that.
I read posts, yesterday, of people who’ve lived in SC for years … and have never seen such a rough surf as that.

I’m not trying to take away anything from this young man, but I would wager that there are equally if not more deserving deeds going on unnoticed everyday in this country. Shouldn’t there be a better way to access this honor? In other words, the Trump son or whomever nominates the lad for an award and it’s reviewed. JUST SAYIN’
If he weren’t a lifeguard, I would say the Carnegie Hero medal, which generally does not apply to someone doing their job.
Biden took a similar courageous action when he was a young lifeguard
Joe Biden’s “Corn Pop” story is a 2017 speech recounting a 1962 confrontation with a local gang leader named William “Corn Pop” Morris while Biden worked as a lifeguard in Wilmington, Delaware. Biden confronted Corn Pop over pool safety rules, was challenged to a fight outside with straight razors, and defused the situation using a six-foot chain and an apology.

Some say they were big waves, some say the biggest waves...
I saw that video the other day, and I was impressed with his strength, bravery, and ability to remain calm under pressure — at 16!! I didn’t expect him to come to the attention of the President, but I am pleased that this young man is getting recognition for saving a boy’s life.

Boo this man!!!!!
Dude, this video is going to be used in Red Cross lifeguard training for the next 50 years.
His decision making under pressure was stellar and he’s only 16!
Same age as the little thug that shot up the Seattle Food Market yesterday.
Brave youngster. The waves continued to crash and the lifeguard and swimmer fought for air. Santa Cruz, in my experience, has very helpful surfers.
Something similar happened to me when I was 10 years old. I was floating on an inner tube in the river mouth at Santa Cruz, California when I partially dozed off, then awoke to find I drifted out to the Pacific Ocean. A stranger swam out in the waves and brought me back to shore. Could have drowned back then, if not for a hero.
Santa Cruz surfers have a history of making rescues

That second lifeguard, probably from another station down the beach, is no slouch either.
The first lifeguard really had his hands full until the second guard showed up.
Doesn’t matter.
Great job by both of them.

True. If one or both of them show up at the White House, that would be a good time for Trump to say that their action is an example of how lifeguards are saving lives every day.
I suspect that lifeguards don’t get the attention they deserve.
