Eating eggs linked to dangerous heart condition that triggers stroke, new study suggests

Eating eggs could increase the risk of developing a dangerous heart rhythm problem that can trigger deadly stroke, a study has suggested.

Researchers have found a link between a compound found in the bloodstream that's released after eating a number of everyday foods - including egg yolks and beef steak - and atrial fibrillation.

The condition, which causes the heart to beat irregularly, can lead to heart failure and stroke.

Now experts at the Cleveland Clinic in the US have found that those with the life-threatening problem have high levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) - which is produced in the gut in response to certain foods.

TMAO is released during digestion of nutrients like carnitine and choline, which are in foods like beef steak and livers, pork and egg yolks.

Scientists in the new study – published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation – analysed the blood cells of 5,000 people from the US.

They found those with higher levels of TMAO in their blood had 70 per cent higher odds of atrial fibrillation than those with the lowest levels.

This was even after accounting for other factors that can increase the risk of the disorder, which include older age, high blood pressure and obesity.

Atrial fibrillation affects around 1.5 million people in the UK.

According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), people with the condition are five times more likely to suffer a stroke.

Robert Koeth, an electrophysiologist at Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study, said: 'Most current treatments for atrial fibrillation focus on managing the condition, but our findings suggest there may be an opportunity to intervene much earlier through diet.'

I remember when eggs were unhealthy, because they raised your cholesterol.

Then eggs were healthy, because they only raised your good cholesterol.

Now eggs are unhealthy again?

All of humans throughout history who ate eggs or steak literally exploded. None were able to have children.
But we only figured this out just now

The study looked at people who already had heart disease and never tested eggs on anyone.

Lol...I just read the paper

They were just telling recently that the more eggs you eat the better for your cholesterol control after decades of campaigning that eggs are bad.

They have backflipped again.

Eggs are a staple which have been eaten by humanity for the past 5000 years. There are nothing wrong with eggs. They have virtually every vitamin and mineral required for a a person to get all the recommended nutrients they need. So this study is crap. It flies in the face of 5000 years of history.

Choline pops up in many of the health doctors I watch...

Are Carnitine and Choline Important in the Diet?

Yes, both matter, though for most people eating a varied diet they aren't a major concern.

Choline

Choline is essential — your body makes some, but not enough to meet needs on its own. It's used to build cell membranes, produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and support liver function (it helps export fat from the liver; deficiency can cause fatty liver). Good sources: eggs (especially yolks), liver, meat, fish, and to a lesser extent soybeans and cruciferous vegetables. Pregnant and breastfeeding women have notably higher needs because choline supports fetal brain development. People eating little to no eggs or meat (e.g., vegans) are more likely to fall short.

Carnitine

Carnitine helps transport fatty acids into mitochondria to be burned for energy. Unlike choline, it's not considered an essential nutrient for most people — your liver and kidneys synthesize enough from the amino acids lysine and methionine, provided you're getting adequate protein, vitamin C, iron, and B6. It's found mainly in red meat, and in smaller amounts in fish, poultry, and dairy. True deficiency is rare and usually linked to genetic disorders or certain medical conditions rather than diet alone. Supplemental carnitine is popular in fitness/weight-loss marketing, but evidence for benefits in healthy people with normal levels is weak.

Bottom Line

Choline deserves more attention since inadequate intake is fairly common (especially in the U.S., where surveys show many people fall short of adequate intake levels), while carnitine is rarely a dietary concern unless you eat very little animal protein or have a specific health condition affecting synthesis.

I was in afib for two solid years and accidentally discovered that drinking 64 ounces of low sodium V8 juice restored me to normal sinus rhythm within a few days. Turns out low sodium V8 is loaded with potassium. I now drink 64 ounces of water with a tablespoon of potassium citrate (equivalent to the amount of potassium in 64 ounces of low sodium V8) every day and have been out of afib for almost two years.

Cost about $10 a month to stay out of afib with potassium citrate. That’s why my cardiologist and the entire medical establishment is completely uninterested. They are only interested in treatments that make lots of money.
