Trump administration weighing military options in Mali, officials say
The Washington Post ^ | July 22 2026 | John Hudson and Rachel Chason

The Trump administration is weighing military action in the West African country of Mali to target an al-Qaeda-affiliated group known as JNIM, said current and former U.S. officials familiar with the deliberations.

If approved, it would add an eighth nation to the list of countries where President Donald Trump has ordered strikes since the start of his second term — a chapter of his presidency that he initially said would be dedicated to ending global strife and redirecting U.S. resources to Americans.

There is disagreement, however, among senior U.S. officials over whether to proceed with attacking the militant group. A vocal advocate for using force is the National Security Council’s senior director for counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka, said the current and former officials, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss military planning.

The militant group, whose full name is Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, has established a stronghold in Mali and increasingly launched attacks in coastal West African nations, establishing itself as the most well-armed militant group in the region and among the most powerful in the world.

A spokesman for Mali’s government did not respond to requests for comment.

Gorka did not respond to requests for comment. The Pentagon declined to comment.

When the White House was asked for comment, an administration official would not disclose whether the president intended to move forward with military strikes, but said the United States has been urging governments in North and West Africa “to purchase U.S. equipment and services to support their war efforts against the terrorists.”

The official said that terrorism in the Sahel, the vast semiarid region south of the Sahara, is a “multinational problem.”

Mali is a former French colony, yes? If so, then let them handle it.

For better or worse, and I’m a long time always Trumper, he has spoiled the campaign promise thing. Now a Dem, Socialist or GOP person who promises to keep us out of war will be laughed at—with good reason. They’ll have to add “and I really, really mean it. This time.”

Woodrow Wilson campaign slogan in 1916 was “He Kept Us Out Of War.” On April 2, 1917 he ordered our military into World War I following increased German submarine attacks.

We can’t finish the job in Iran...so we go hunting up trouble where we have no real interests whatsoever?

I believe our President has better information than all the internet foreign policy experts. And limited strikes are not a forever war.

Mail.
Leave African to the Africans. Enough blood and treasure has been wasted on that continent. Send them all back and keep them there. We are told Africans built everything in the world so they can make Wakanda on their own terms.

All the FReeper Allahu Akhbar Chorus can’t be moved to protect the Christians being murdered by muslims around the world.

Unless there is a Joooo nearby who can be plausibly blamed. Then they get all up in arms about the Joooo nearby, but almost never (twice in the last 18 months) the muslim trigger puller.

Only that Iran seems like it has gone on FOREVER. A lot longer than it appeared when Trump gloated about taking out some of Iran's leaders and supposed nuclear sites with the initial air strikes.

Trump administration is actively debating targeted military drone or air strikes inside the country to counter a powerful al-Qaeda-linked terrorist network.

The proposed action would involve precision drone strikes against terrorist leadership and networks, similar to ongoing U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Somalia and Yemen.
