Baltimore daughter who inherited dad’s home takes on $228K water bill that she says belongs to entire neighborhood

A Baltimore daughter who inherited her late dad’s home claims she has been threatened with having her water cut off as she took on a $228,000 water bill she says belongs to her entire neighborhood, reports say.

Kristina Moore was left mystified when she spotted a note plastered on the front door of her childhood home in April warning her that her water could be switched off if the hefty debt wasn’t paid within 45 days, WBFF reported.

Moore has been footed with the bill as the 37-home neighborhood, which is part of the Springwood Estates Homeowners Association, has just one meter and it’s linked to her address.

Never had a desire to live in a HOA neighborhood.

Moore has been footed with the bill as the 37-home neighborhood, which is part of the Springwood Estates Homeowners Association, has just one meter and it’s linked to her address. This is despite the fact that homeowners calculate the amount of water they use, and pay their share to the HOA. Then HOA officials uses that money to pay off bills issued by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works.

Long time ago back in college, my roommate and I let the AC run on low the entire summer. Neighbors were what I seem to recall being Malaysian students and seemed to prefer the heat and humidity like their home country because I did notice they kept their windows open during hot humid weather.

One day, one of them approached us to discuss utility bills. Ours were always very low. Not long after that, a discovery was made that our meters had been swapped. They were being billed for our electricity and we were being billed for their low usage.

We never had to pay any back bill and assume the utility and/or landlord resolved the matter.

A gal I know rented a storefront in a small and rather dilapidated old strip mall. Her first month’s water bill was enormous. Turns out there was just one meter for the entire mall, and it was linked to her store.

The landlord never bothered to tell her about it, or how the bill was split in the past.

This happened just recently. So I don’t know how it turned out.

She needs to tell the water department that they are all wet.

Before there were HOAs, shared meters existed were everyone chipped in and one person paid the bill.

HOAs were created to mitigate these and other issues. Having their EIN allows them to have business accounts, and avoid such shared meters.

But I am in the Midwest and not on the East Coast.

What’s weird about this saga is that if we assume that every house has a $300 water bill, which is enormous, then this has been going on to the tune of $10,000 a month for 2 years

So if she doesn’t pay the bill then the other 37 homes will lose their water too, right?

Forget the question. This is Baltimore. Maryland.

Idiots are in charge.

Where an HOA is involved, I can easily imagine there are some flaws connected with this “incident”. Had the house been sitting empty with no water use prior to the time the daughter acquired it? There has to be some reason revealed as to how the past due bill got this high before the new owner acquired the place. Maybe the HOA is trying to “inherit” the property instead of the daughter.

HOA’s get a lot of hate but they really do cut both ways. If you are in a nice neighborhood and a family full of a-holes move in you will be glad the HOA is there.

Maybe many homeowners have swimming pools and maybe the HOA is like mine and contracts with private water utilities.

My water bill last month was $202. Just for me and the Mrs. And we never water the lawn. It’s acerage.

I got 2 or 3 years free electricity when the company did something to my meter, and the repair or new one never engaged.

Well, this can be solved if we know what race she has, the pigment tone of her skin. She can scream RACIST if she is black, and that is the magic word. OR... if she is TRANSGENDER she can scream PREJUDICE.. There is always a card to play, just keep drawing from the stack, until you get the TRUMP card.

Never glad an HOA is there. I’d rather live in a cardboard box in an alley than in a busybody HOA.

My water bill is less than $20 a month and I live in Memphis. I can’t comprehend the amount some of you pay.

You’re right, of course. Technically we already live in a “Homeowners Association”, it’s the City. The municipal government is supposed to do all that stuff. Which they don’t, so we end up paying twice. Sending our children to private schools does not mean we forego that portion of property tax allocated to public schools. Do HOA members avoid paying at least some portions of city property tax? I would think so, but ..

She needs to talk to whomever operates the Springwood Estates Homeowners Association. Relying on each homeowner to “calculate how much water they use and pay their share to the HOA” sounds like complete BS.

How can the average bill be $6162.16? Something is amiss here.
