Donald Trump says the US is reinstating its blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, beginning "immediately"
In a post on Truth Social, he says the US will be the "guardian" of the vital waterway and impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped to pay for the cost of "safety and security" - how this will work in practice is unclear, writes our White House reporter

IMHO Trump is trolling the media all over the world to get them to yell no to a toll tax on Hormuz — and he’ll use that as leverage against Iran’s demands for a toll tax.
We know him so well...lol....Iran will go nuts.
So, we are going to do what we attempted to forbid the IRGC from doing?
Interesting...
Yup. Either way — the world announces global opposition to a toll at Hormuz (take that Iran!) or else the world specifically declines Trump’s offer to keep the strait safe (We’re pulling out! Maybe China can fix this situation — they need this oil more than we do!)
A bluff no one thinks you’ll actually commit isn’t leverage.
It’s the opposite.
But this is Trump! That makes it different.
Only on a level significantly higher which would add 20% to the cost of everything that passes through the Strait. Not happening.
All this attention while discriminately ignoring the Gays of Hormuz.
Not just Iran.
And since this was never just about the mullahs...
Works for me.
From where I sit it seems like a negotiation tactic... plain and simple. I can’t understand why the media is perplexed by this. Sure, the US will assert military control over the strait and make sure it is open for free navigation - but the fee should be an issue for the US as it would be an issue for Iran. He’s asking for a toll so that everyone gets on board with no toll.
I think it’s also important to note that we’re not an active participant in UNCLOS - it hasn’t been ratified by the Senate, ever.
Is this another bluff or real policy.
Not a part of UNCLOS. One of a few good decisions over the years.
Trump’s a real-estate guy
He understands this is prime property.
It’s a tactic. And a damn good one at that...
I think that’s now up to the Iranians. Do they press forward opposing it with an armed struggle, back off, or just let it happen?
Ball’s now in their court. I expect to see several more rounds...
The Chinese could and might sail in and out with interference from no one.
Trump is simply expelling warm air and looking silly.
Trump should simply phone Bibi and wish him Good Luck:
B’hatzlacha (בהצלחה)
Copilot
I don’t know that I agree it would be a great tactic at all. It makes Iran’s original suggestion of a toll of $1MM a ship far more reasonable. A cargo ship holds hundreds of millions of product. 20% of that cargo vs. Iran saying $1MM... Who do you think the world would side with in that case if it came down to one or the other?
Amen! Take their territories forever! They’ll be beside themselves in mental agony and despair.
So. Who’s turn is it today to blockade the Strait?
Iran or the USA?
It’s nice that these two take turns in blocking it.
