With Lindsey Graham's death, and John Cornyn's defeat, Mike Lee is second in seniority, next to 92 year old Chuck Grassley (elected in 1980).
Grassley has been maintaining the old blue slip tradition, preventing the confirmation of US Attorneys that Democrats don't like.
If Grassley dies, or chooses to be chair of another committee come January, Mike Lee will be chair (assuming the Republicans hold the Senate).
Thom Tillis (who also blocked nominees) will also be gone, and Ken Paxton will likely be added.
On the Democrat side, Dick Durbin is retiring (moving Whitehouse to ranking member) and Amy Klobuchar is running for governor of Minnesota.
The Senate Judiciary Committee come January will be completely changed.

We really, REALLY need term limits.
Can’t tell your corrupt lawmakers without a scorecard...
Mitch McConnell kept convincing Grassley to run again, likely specifically to keep Judiciary in Old Guard hands.
A number of Trump’s US Attorneys have been blocked, due to blue slips not being returned.
So establishment buddies couldn’t be prosecuted.
But changes come.
Lee will be a breath of fresh air
actually Grassley at his age has been more effective than others much younger, particularly on intel, protection and advancing of whistleblowers. but i do think maybe committee chairman, advanced on basis of seniority, don’t need to be so old so we ensure policy continuity. but then Graham - so influential on committees - was only 71.
.
Lindsey Graham blocked Subpoenas for years - protected all the Biden’s from his Judiciary seat. Protected Comey and the gang.
He defended General Milley, Liz Cheney, Wray, Hunter,
Mueller and his team, and on and on.
This is why I would have preferred the Senate to strike while it could. Dither and Rome burns.
The dithering is intentional. They just want to get to September 30th every year, to play the shutdown/continuing resolution game again.
He was awful and pretended to be conservative to maintain his position.
An insidious snake has been removed from the chessboard via death.
Sure seems that way this time. Even Ray Charles could see it.
Has he objected to the idiotic “gaveling in” sessions to prevent recession appointments?
Are politicians like celebrities where they die in threes? Who’s the next one?
Lots of them stay in office way too long
We have a geriatric waiting room filled to the brim with people that should have been removed a decade or more ago.
"The demon at Window #3 yells NEXT!"
John Cornyn is a Senator until January 3, 2027.
I agree.
They had their chance to Save America and it looks like they just threw it away
