Trump says Walmart will lower prices on ground beef, other items

July 6 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Monday that Walmart would lower prices on many products, including ground beef, after a request from his administration.

The retailer said customers would save on items including meat, produce and soda at its Walmart ‌and Sam's Club stores this summer.

Record-high beef prices have strained the wallets of U.S. consumers who also paid much higher gasoline prices after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February.

Prices for steaks and hamburger meat soared after a persistent drought burned pasture lands and hiked costs of cattle feed, forcing U.S. ranchers to slash their herds. Economists have said it will take years to rebuild the herd to expand domestic beef supplies.

Trump said Walmart will drop prices on a pound of ground beef by "almost" 15% after his administration made a request to coincide with the nation's 250th birthday.

"This is a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Walmart said in a statement that the price of one pound of 73% ground beef roll would drop ‌to $5.94 from $6.74 in its stores, a decline of about 12%. The retailer also said it lowered prices on items including Coca-Cola (KO.N), opens new tab and PepsiCo (PEP.O), opens new tab sodas and chips.

At Sam's Club stores, Member's Mark 88/12 ground beef will be priced at $5.97 per pound, instead of $6.17, a 3% decline, according to the statement.

"Walmart is stepping up in a big and bold way, and other Retailers should follow the lead of these absolute Patriots," Trump said.

Now if he could just do it with the price of gas. Methinks Walmart is not the only big business that’s scared of him.

I’ve sold Walmart bulk meat products for years. They are absolutely brutal to deal with.

They would tell you to go pound salt on 1 million lbs of meat over a half a cent.

The cure for high prices is high prices. Want to know the real driver of meat prices? I’ve now known several people who were my renters who got their cash by buying the most expensive meat and reselling it at cents on the dollar. One woman told me she had not eaten solid food for months. Yet her refrigerator was stuffed with high priced meat. She told me she used the sale to pay her rent, buy tobacco, pot and beer. I can tell you that nobody is interested in knowing this in any government agency I’d ever dealt with. They not only don’t care, the government can see every item purchased. When a person lives off “benefits” they’re supposed to be buying staples, not 100% one product. Nobody does anything to stop this...almost like that’s what the government intends.

So you don't believe prices should be set by the market?

And producers are all "gouging?"

What if Trump decides you're being paid too much and tells your employer to reduce your pay?

We just got shot at in the parking lot of our Wal-Mart today so no thanks. No more Wal-Mart for me. Bullet pinged off the asphalt about 10 feet from me. I’ve had all the Wal-Mart I can stand.

They had a saying in Texas - shot at and missed, shit at and hit. No idea what it means.

We are paying $6.00/lb for 85% lean at Alberton’s in Idaho right now. In fact I’m gonna grill a Cheeseburger tonite. T-bone on the 4th for the wife and me was $10/lb. But being in our 70’s it’s a cheep feed the bakers out here are pretty cheap. I figured after three generations in uniform, I deserved a t-bone on the 250th birthday of the USA. Besides at 74 I saved enough not buying fireworks to pay for my meal and a beer. DJT is doing his best. I wish the herds (cows) were bigger. Drought and feed prices around here worry me. Happy 4th yall.

Aldi is good! We were in there last week and their price on chicken is really fantastic! But I was there for a Wine and Cheese Run, LOL! (Winking Owl wines. Good stuff, nice variety even though I HATE supporting CA in any way. Grrr!) $3.99 a bottle. Hello!

We raise a steer on an 18 month cycle. We will soon be adding meat chickens to the fray. We buy 1/2 a Hog from the neighboring farm each fall.

I know most people can’t raise their own meat, but if you can, you should. Meat rabbits don’t take up much space. A Tom Turkey each year provides a LOT of meat. Goats or Spring Lambs, if you’re so inclined. (I’m not...though I WOULD like an Angora Goat for the eventual yarn!)

Learn to fish. Learn to hunt. Come on, People! We can do this! :)

What about all the other products they are price gouging on?
No competition, no price control.
Walmart drove out most competitors in many towns and they set the price.
Made in USA? Yea, Usa is a province in china.

Walmart buyers are trained to be a******s. They will squeeze blood from a stone.

I will never shop there.

My family hunts and fishes....plenty of sea bass and cod in my freezer.

Deer meat...I just take the ground beef...the butcher adds pork to it.

Spoken like a true patriot. My wife wants a goat to keep the fence rows clean🙄, and they are cute. I told her to feed a carrot and an apple to her 1000 lb cute pony. 😁 there’s an old HankJr song “country folks can survive “. More people need to take up the idea. Be safe.
