A Gavin Newsom-run commission has handed over a spectacular 136-acre California beach back to three Indigenous tribes.
Blues Beach and the Mendocino County bluffs will be handed over to a tribal nonprofit group, Kai Poma, which represents the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians, Round Valley Indian Tribes and Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians.
The historic June 26 move is the first time the California Department of Transportation has returned land back to the Indigenous people, The Los Angeles Times reported.
'This is beyond huge,' J Carlos Rivera, the Sherwood Valley tribal chairman, told The LA Times.
'It's enormous from our tribal perspective that we are basically obtaining the land that our people once lived on before colonization.'
The beach, located south of Westport, offers sweeping ocean views. California purchased the land in the 1960s while expanding Highway 1 to give motorists a scenic view of the shoreline and its rugged cliffs, according to a coastal commission report.
It comes after the California Coastal Commission, which is overseen by Newsom, announced plans to return land to Native American tribes in an effort centered on 'healing and restoration,' according to a press release.
Newsom unveiled more than $100 million in funding for 33 land projects aimed at supporting Native American tribes.
The historic June 26 move is the first time the California Department of Transportation has returned land back to the Indigenous people, The Los Angeles Times reported.
'These awards are an acknowledgment of past sins, a promise of accountability, and a commitment to a better future,' the Democratic governor said in a statement at the time.
Public access has remained largely unregulated in recent years, drawing large crowds to the beach on summer weekends and holidays for camping and parties

The indigenous First Nation tribes(Indians) should turn it over to the Clovis people from 14,000 years ago!
It is quite possible that those Indians stole (or conquered) that land from other Indians. Newsom should set up a commission to trace the land back to its original owners.
And if the cost of that investigation runs into hundreds of millions of dollars, hey, it’s the California way.
And toll booths on the roads.

I was born in this country as well as my father, grandfather, great grandfather and at least a couple more, one of them came from Germany. I consider myself a “Native American”. Besides, the so-called “Native Americans” were originally from some other place, and they fought amongst themselves and the victor claimed the land as their own. Pretty much similar history all over the world.

You’re giving it away and yet you need funding for the non-Native Cal-DOT?
Let me explain how this works.
Newsome gives them the land. They sell the land to the Chinese. IN time, China owns the entire West Coast and takes it from the US.

Not so fast, pal. You can’t just declare yourself to be eligible.
You’ve got to take a few steps first.
Step 1: Contact Elizabeth Warren. Find out how to present yourself as an Indian.
Step 2: Contact Barack Obama. Find out how to forge the legal documents you’ll need.
Not very difficult, actually.

It is impossible to know the “original owners”. We don’t even know for certain when humans first colonized North and South America, but it is looking to be over 20,000 years ago.

That would probably be the tribes found at the Tierra del Fuego in South America. Probably first across the Bearing Straits, then driven out by stronger tribes who were then driven out by even stronger tribes who were then driven out by stronger tribes for the last 12 000 years till there was no place left to run.

As I say on many of this type of thread the ‘Native Americans’ ancestors came here and killed and ate the previous inhabitants.
