Squatters take over home of slain UC Berkeley professor, family says

A year after a University of California, Berkeley professor was killed during a custody dispute in Greece, his family says they're fighting to try to get alleged squatters out of his East Bay home.

The family of Przemyslaw Jeziorski said the alleged squatters have been living in the Berkeley home for months, but California's eviction process has made removing them far more complicated.

Jeziorski was shot and killed in Greece last July in the middle of a custody battle. The boyfriend of Jeziorski's ex-wife later confessed to the shooting. Jeziorski's ex-wife, Nadia Michelidaki, died by suicide in a Greek prison this past May.

The former couple’s home, used for Airbnb, is now occupied. Court records show the people living there claim they signed a one-year lease with Jeziorski's ex-wife and paid $30,000 up front. Erinne Stratte, the Jeziorski family's attorney, said that's impossible because she was in prison when the lease was allegedly signed.

"The homeowner just has to let the squatters stay, and based on their criminal background and the inconsistencies in their statements, it's clear that they are not telling the truth," Stratte said.

Last December, Berkeley police found signs of a break-in and possible squatting. A woman later returned claiming she had a one-year lease. Stratte said the occupants have provided no proof of a lease or payment, and police reports show conflicting accounts of when they moved in. Despite eviction notices, they remain in the home.

"If they are making an allegation, they gave money to someone, and then the law is requiring us to indemnify or prevent the squatters from harm in case someone else took advantage of them, which I see as a flaw in the law," Stratte said

NBC Bay Area went to the home and knocked on the door, but no one answered. The phone number listed in court records has been disconnected.

The family alleges the occupants have been selling belongings from the home — something neighbors said they've seen at yard sales.

Attorneys said the court process could take months. Meanwhile, Jeziorski's brother, Lukasz Jeziorski, continues to raise the couple's 11-year-old twins while paying the mortgage on the home the children are supposed to inherit.

"They are stealing from the two orphans," Lukasz said. "If you ask me what I think about them, I feel nothing good. I feel that they are very bad people."

According to the Democrat Socialists of America, a very Berkeley sort of group, squatting will be made legal.

So suck it up!

The City of Berkeley - and other East Bay cities - continue to vote for or vote in candidates that support these types of policies.

Exactly what Americans used to do to squatters. It should be a lot easier to do these days with the small numbers of LEOs we have left trying to enforce the law.

Squatters? How racist to call them that! They are refugees!

Many states make it ridiculously difficult to remove a squatter. This happened to a friend of mine. He has an Airbnb, and two “guests” just decided they weren’t going to pay or leave. The cops told him it was a civil matter, and he had to go through the courts.

My friend eventually paid the squatters to leave.

Here’s another solution: Hire the Squatter Hunter. He moves in with the squatters and makes life miserable for them.

“The former couple’s home, used for Airbnb”

Pretty damn STUPID to use Airbnb in California...given their eviction laws.

“Attorneys said the court process could take months.”

In Florida, and probably Texas (not as sure), one phone call by the owner to the cops would have the ‘situation’ taken care of...probably within a couple of hours.

Hire the obnoxious removal guy. He moves in and is a nightmare room mate so bad the squatters can’t stand him.

😊👍🇺🇸

I believe all squatters should be shot as criminal home invaders, because that is what they are.

A professor at Berkley? The place where everything anti-American originates? Gee, I just cannot feel sorry for this guy.

I heard, that one of the best way to remove squatters is to move in, and squatter in your own home!
And make the life unbearable to the original squatters!

In some states, such as ND where I live, squatters are criminal trespassers and can be kicked out by the cops.

Shooting them could be unwise unless they break into your home while you are in it. Think of the headlines: “Home owner shoots and kills a hungry, starving family of Somali immigrants”. The leftist media would have the homeowner crucified and cremated before he could call a lawyer.
