Court says woman who regrets transition can sue therapist

The Texas Supreme Court has ruled the statute of limitations has not run out on a lawsuit against the therapist who recommended a woman wanting to transition her gender remove her breasts.

In 2023, Soren Aldaco sued the providers who made her double mastectomy possible, including therapist Barbara Wood and her employer, Thriveworks.

After struggling with her gender identity throughout her teenage years, Aldaco contacted the Crane Clinic to schedule a double mastectomy and was advised that to move forward she’d need a letter from a practitioner recommending her for the surgery, according to the high court’s opinion.

Aldaco sought the letter from Wood, a therapist with whom she’d been having telehealth sessions to talk about relationship issues.

On February 22, 2021, Wood signed the letter endorsing the surgery, and on June 11, 2021, Aldaco underwent a double mastectomy at the Crane Clinic.

“But the surgery Aldaco had hoped would solve her problems only made them worse,” the opinion states. “She experienced post-surgical complications that required emergency medical care. Research and self-reflection ultimately led her to regret the life-changing and body-altering procedure she’d once embraced.”

Hopefully, malpractice insurance companies will soon stop covering medical professionals who recommend or perform mutilations on mentally ill people.

No, wrong wrong decision. They would have let her sue him if he refused to transition her. If he did what they want, they can sue after the fact. If they refuse to do it, and not bake the cake, they can sue. Damned if you do, damned if you dont. Where is the personal responsibility of the patient/customer here?

Insanity. Kangaroo effing court.

I generally am not on the sue, sue, sue bandwagon, but in this case I hope it is enough to change the economics of these procedures and that it makes them unprofitable to perform.

You would think we are going to start seeing a lot of these but l am not so sure. It would a hell of a thing to admit to yourself that you mutilated your body during a period of confusion.

Man, I am so sorry promoting mutilation as a medical procedure has become a legal minefield.

Maybe the industry should have listened to saner heads to begin with, and not jumped on the Marxist-affirming bandwagon. The whole point was to take society down another notch, and I’m sure they did it with smug looks on their faces. Eff’em.

It’s tough to work up much sympathy for a transition therapist who finds herself in a no win situation. She could have pursued a legitimate trade.

This is so sick in so many ways.
This so called mental health professional should have put the skids on this **** in the first place. And any surgeon permanently surgically mutilates a mentally ill person should be strung up

Forget the argument that if I didn’t do the surgery someone else would. Then don’t do the surgery let somebody else be the monster.

Every so medical health professional that enables this butchery could not be punished sufficiently to satisfy me. They are monsters. Nothing less

If she was legally an adult when she approved those procedures, then she has no case to sue.
She simply has to live with a bad decision that can never be fully fixed.

I have told parents to gather the names of every doctor therapist social worker planned parent hood. Nurse teacher facilitator school and district. All carry liability and when the right time comes... sue their asses.

The UK has a Supreme Court. The UK is much more pro-trans than the US.

However, their Supreme Court last year ruled 11-0 that, as far as the law is concerned, there are only two sexes, male and female, and that at law “Man” refers to a human male and “woman” referes to a human female.

OUR Supreme Court has three of nine sitting Justices who referred to boys pretending to be female as “girls” in their written dissents.

We have a long, long way to go here.

I dont think its the surgeons that let these people who need mental, help down as much as the psychiatric community has, these were the doctors and therapists who sa8d it was totally normal and wonderful. These surgical docs are in a catch22 spot, they get sued if they refuse to do it, and they can get sued if they do,it, by a patient who by all prior normal human being standards is mentally ill and messed up, but the hrink community has blessed them and says they’re fine, so the courts wont say they are nuts and have no standing...

Not the docor’s fault tat she’s crazy.

This was the therapist who exacerbated the mental damage. I'd say it's appropriate.

There is no evidence-based standard for recommending or endorsing transgender surgery. This counselor, like so many these days, acted beyond her level of competence, which is in itself unethical. In writing this letter she held herself out as an expert in an area where expertise does not exist. It is a common practice in the rapidly degenerating business of psychological counseling. There will be many more such lawsuits as the consequences of such catastrophic malpractice become more clear.

The best parallel is the therapist-induced “recovered/ repressed memory of childhood sexual abuse” hysteria of the late 80s and 90s. A whole echelon of self-appointed crusading therapists from that era ended up having to find other work in a new career after having their licenses yanked for malpractice and negligence.

I could t agree with you more. I’m a voice in the wilderness around d here that lawsuit are not like winning the lottery. But you’re right: some judgments against these mo sters will result in carrier refusing to write malpractice coverage
