A new California law bans the sale of Glock-style handguns, citing concerns over their ability to be converted into fully automatic weapons, while a federal lawsuit challenges the ban.
California has enacted a ban on Glock-style handguns, citing concerns over their mechanics that allow them to be easily converted into fully automatic weapons.
"The whole purpose of the ban is this plate is removed and another plate goes on it with a sliding switch," said Ray Parga, owner of Valley Armory and Gunsmithing.
Law enforcement demonstrated how quickly the conversion can be made, showing that a tiny device can turn a handgun into a fully automatic weapon in seconds.
California is cracking down on both the illegal conversion devices and the sale of new Glock-style handguns.
"Dealers can't sell a Glock out of inventory anymore, and they can't take it on consignment. The two-party private party transfers will still be allowed. So if two individuals come in and do a gun shop or any gun shop in California, they can still transfer that Glock pistol between them," Parga said.
Owning a Glock-style handgun remains legal in California, and those who already own one are grandfathered in, meaning they are not required to surrender or destroy them.
"It's like a disposable camera. They're kind of a point and shoot," Parga said.
Parga esaid that the state stopped all imports of the weapon model back in January, and all existing stock at California gun shops will now be sold to out-of-state markets.
"We could initiate paperwork up until June 30th. But then after June 30, July 1, we can't do any more paperwork. So any Glocks that we have in inventory, it'll have to be sold out of state," Parga said.
On the same day the new law took effect, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against California, arguing that the ban violates the Second Amendment. The lawsuit also challenges the state's handgun roster, which limits the types of handguns that can be sold in California.
California has stated that the ban addresses the growing use of illegal conversion devices, such as switches, to turn these weapons automatic. However, with the lawsuit still pending, the future of these firearms in California remains uncertain.
Before today, California's handgun roster approved all Gen-3 Glocks, but those are now also banned as of Wednesday.

Pargas analogy is moronic. Firzt, all guns are point and shoot. Second, unlike a camera where you may want a lot of photos in a short burst to catch details, people generally don’t spray and pray with their guns regardless how fast they can shoot.
Quick! Someone find a judge to wag their finger at them and tell them, “No, no, no!”
Oh wait, our side doesn’t have any of those, do we?
CA democrats ignore laws they don’t like (illegals, trannies) and pass laws they know are unconstitutional.
It is no wonder Ryder rentals can’t keep up with those wishing to flee the state.
I can’t imagine shooting a fully automatic pistol without some kind of stock on it
Really stupid idea
How California got an AW ban passed.
In 1982, California placed before the voters a bill to register and ban handguns. It was guaranteed to pass! The voters REJECTED IT. The State has NEVER placed a gun bill before the voters since.

In 1988 the State wrote up a real bad AW ban bill so unpopular it was shelved. Then they created a crisis to get it passed.
They released Pat Purdy from a MENTAL HOSPITAL, allowed him to violate gun laws by buying guns over the counter, passing the waiting periods and back ground checks.
He then in 1989 went and shot up the Stockton School yard killing several students and himself.
The shelved bill was pulled out and passed before opposition could be mounted against it.
I always said if they can get this AW ban to stick they will be back for the HANDGUNS starting with the Glock.
Yeah, muzzle control on a full auto subgun with a folding stock requires attention as it is...I’d think a Glock with a switch would be useless.

It’s just for fun. I got to fire one during SHOT show in Las Vegas a couple years ago.
Sure am glad CA grandfathered me in otherwise id have to turn in my favorite Glocks for disposal. RIIIIIIIIIGGGGGHHHHHHHTTTTTT.
I can’t find one of them conversion switches anywhere. And whoever suggested asking the ATF about them got me in hot water. Thanks a lot.
Dey be a BFD inna da hood!
If it “just saves one life” band every black male 15 to 35 in the state.
What is a “Glock style” handgun? Most 9mm semi-auto handguns look pretty much alike. Is this a backdoor way to ban all 9mm handguns?
One where the addition of one of these devices will hold the trigger bar down and become an auto sear. I’m not aware of switches for other guns, although it’s possible.
The patents on the Gen3 Glocks have expired so now about a thousand diffent companies are selling legal Glock knock-offs under their own brand. They use the term to cover the knock-offs that aren't branded "GLOCK."
None of this would be possible in California if the BATF hadn’t designated a Glock switch, and all similar devices, as machine guns with the same punitive possession laws. That’s what California is using to justify this nonsense.
Oh, last time I looked, Scott Bessant was the Secretary of Treasury, which houses BATF.
