Russia pounds on the gates of Ukraine's 'fortress belt'

Russia is grinding its way into Kostiantynivka, a key stronghold in Ukraine's eastern "fortress belt" long coveted by the Kremlin, even as its gains across the rest of the 1,200-km front line have largely stalled.

Fighting has begun to seep into the city itself. Small groups of Russian soldiers are attempting to infiltrate its outskirts, senior Ukrainian commanders said last week, suggesting close-quarters assaults could follow.

Kostiantynivka is the southernmost of four key ‌settlements forming a defensive line central to Ukraine's effort to hold the heavily industrialised Donetsk region.

The push towards it underscores Moscow's enduring manpower advantage, even as Ukrainian mid-range drone strikes on logistics have weakened its fighting capabilities, analysts said.

"The effect (of mid-range strikes) hasn't been so great that it would have forced the Russians to suspend their offensive," said Emil Kastehelmi of the Black Bird conflict analysis team in Finland.

Zelinski has been playing rope-a-dope with Putin. Putin is wasting men as cannon fodder by the thousands daily for meager gains while Zelinski has been smoking Russia’s industrial base and petroleum production economic base. If Putin doesn’t change course quickly, he will go the way of Tsar Nicholas II.

He will ring the starting bell of global thermonuclear war if he perceives that danger.

Every time I’ve looked into it I’ve learned that Russia’s nukes are on a “dead man’s switch”.

Meaning what?

Putin gets killed and the Russian ICBMs start flying?

Russia would last about 15 minutes against US missiles ... but what a great way to get rid of Russia!

“but what a great way to get rid of Russia!”

Yeah, and the USA too. Maybe some of our missiles will go “astray” and hit Canada. We get a twofer getting rid of two hostle powers.

And who would have started the mess?

Russia.

Again, without any provocation.

Just because Russia is an irresponsible asshole country.

Pretty soon he’s going to list his war aims as reconquering Rostov, Sevastopol and Voronezh.

I suspect you're as knowledgeable about the true serviceability of our nukes as you are about Russia's. I also know it would take over 15 minutes for either country's nukes to even reach the other's.

Even if we hit them with 1000 nukes, and they only managed to hit us with 50, all it would mean is that they perished instantly while we perished over a year, living without electricity, and with cannibalism. I'm not sure that's really "winning".

The cheerleading propaganda from The Usual Suspects is better than Patriot missile air defenses.

“Kostiantynivk”

I think the Russians tried to take it for months, with small gains, and probably lots of dead Russians.

You got the chronology wrong ... Russia is the one attacking first, because of some idiotic notion that if Pootin dies, a nuclear war must be launched

(btw, that would probably never happen ... because, to launch such an attack would require the cooperation of many senior military people, who would probably refuse, on the simple grounds that, well, the whole reason is idiotic ... nobody cares about Pootin that much that they're willing to annihilate the country)

I love watching Russian soldiers get blown up by their own personal drones. Looks like victory.

That, I'm afraid, is not a question I'm at liberty to answer. Suffice it to say I've "lived in that world", albeit long ago.
