How the Iran War Ignited a Clash Between Trump and the Saudi Crown Prince

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pressed President Trump earlier to cripple Iran. But as Iran asserted its power, the prince urged a cease-fire, and is now pursuing his security priorities.

President Trump and his military commanders were in a bind.

They had announced the start of a new mission to help guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had effectively closed early in the war. U.S. naval and air power would ward off any Iranian attacks during a tentative cease-fire, the commanders said.

But U.S. Central Command was caught by surprise when officials from Saudi Arabia said American forces could not use the kingdom’s air space for the mission, which the Pentagon was calling Project Freedom. The Americans had not consulted the Saudis.

That set off a flurry of tense and urgent phone calls between Washington and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the leader of Saudi Arabia. An outraged Mr. Trump spoke with him on May 4, the first day of the operation, and on the next two days as well, U.S. officials said.

Vice President JD Vance talked to the prince in a separate call, as did Steve Witkoff, the special envoy to the Middle East, and Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law. Marco Rubio, the White House national security adviser, spoke to his counterpart.

But the crown prince stood his ground, fearing that the American plan could reignite war. The Trump administration was forced to shut down Project Freedom less than 48 hours after it had begun.

“They had lost confidence in the administration, and they thought if they let the U.S. use their airspace, they would get hit even harder by Iran,” said Hussein Ibish, a scholar at...

The NY times has a vested interest in losing this war. As the propaganda press for the RAT party nothing Trump does can be allowed to succeed. That is why I suspect this whole article is fiction.

I think most of the Gulf states except for the UAE probably want us out rather than risk being attacked again by Iran. Fine with me, bring our troops home and let the Gulf nations sort it out. We’re $40 trillion in debt and now Trump starts a major unnecessary war (for Israel). Talk about bait and switch this is the exact opposite of what he promised during his campaign. I swear I’m done with this guy. My suspicion is Trump is being blackmailed by Israel. Now Trump wants to send our marines into Lebanon. Why are we guarding Israel’s borders when we should be guarding our own? This Israel firster stuff is getting entirely out of hand.

Yeah well there’s a growing number of Conservatives who are experiencing ‘Israel fatigue’ themselves it’s not just the left.

Agreed. As you say, the zeros in the amount of the national debt is staggering and we’re looking for places to wage war as though we are still in the George W. Bush era. Enough.

Let the UAE and or Oman dig a canal to avoid Iran's territorial waters. Then they can charge a toll.

“Trump starts a major unnecessary war (for Israel)”

Go suck your thumb. Stopping Iran from getting nukes - and consider where things would be now if they had them - has been a US goal for 50 years.

So crawl under your bed and hope Bibi doesn’t send Tyler Robinson to kill you. Maybe erect a shrine to Candice Owens while you are at it.

You are correct, it’s all Israel. And now that they know about you, it’s trouble. They have your room bugged. Check your furniture. Do you own a pet? It may be bugged as well.

Preach, brother. It’s ALL Israel. But now that you’ve said the quiet part out loud, they’ve moved you to the priority watchlist. Your room isn’t just bugged — the drywall itself is on payroll. Check your furniture? Amateur hour. You need to flip every single cushion, unscrew every lamp, and waterboard your throw pillows. Pets? Your cat isn’t just bugged, it’s a double agent. That judgmental stare? It’s uploading your browser history in real time.

Don’t even trust your own shadow anymore — it’s been seen lingering suspiciously near the light switch. And for the love of God, stop blinking. Every blink is a shutter click straight to Tel Aviv. I already said too much. If this comment gets deleted in the next 30 seconds, you’ll know they got me. Stay frosty. They’re everywhere.

It wasn’t “for Israel,” it was because Iran has been waging a proxy war on the United States for four decades and has lately been conducting kidnapping and assassination operations inside the US, mainly because some idiotic previous Presidents bent over in submission to Iran.

The only blackmail going on was the threats made by Iran, overtly andvia the back door threats they have been making.

This is a huge load of BS from The NY Times

The Saudis have been the biggest beneficiaries in the Gulf of the Trump war in the Persian Gulf

They are delighted with the way things are going in the region

No, there’s not a “growing number”. … it is the same old farts it has always been, the so-called “conservatives” who talk a good game but then have always been such surrenderjunkies that they were even willing to campaign with communists because they have pretty much the same foreign policy.
