A Moorpark man has been sentenced after he pleaded guilty in the death of a 69-year-old Jewish demonstrator who suffered a head injury in an alleged altercation during dueling Israel-Hamas war protests in Thousand Oaks.

Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji, a 53-year-old Moorpark College professor, was sentenced to one year in Ventura County Jail and two years of felony probation in the 2023 death of pro-Israel demonstrator and retiree Paul Kessler, the Ventura County DA announced Tuesday.

Alnaji pleaded guilty on May 5, 2026, to felony involuntary manslaughter and felony battery causing serious bodily injury. He also admitted to a special allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury, along with aggravating factors that he used a weapon and that the victim was particularly vulnerable.
