Chinese carmakers ‘knocking at US gate’ from Mexico and Canada; Beijing-subsidised vehicles emerge as flashpoint in North American trade relationship
Financial Times ^ | 6/26/26 | Jude Webber

Posted on 06/27/2026 6:45:11 AM PDT by Callahan

Chinese cars are increasingly driving a wedge between the US, Mexico and Canada ahead of a July 1 deadline to renew North America’s faltering free-trade pact, deepening a rift already torn open by Donald Trump’s tariffs. The US is the only major market Chinese cars have yet to conquer — but it remains firmly off-limits. Washington has in effect banned them to combat suspected surveillance technology amid fears the vehicles, heavily subsidised by Beijing, would kill off America’s domestic auto industry. By contrast, Mexico’s love affair with cheap Chinese cars has made it Beijing’s top car export destination and Canada is actively courting investment from Chinese electric-vehicle makers. For Beijing, that offers a tantalising toehold from which to launch into the US market. “They are positioning themselves so that whenever the political landscape changes . . . they’ll be ready to provide vehicles in that market as well,” said Farid Ahmad, head of Dealer Solutions and Mergers and Acquisitions, who is working with Chinese companies to expand across Canada. “They’re knocking at the [US] gate,” he added.

…Two Democratic senators last month introduced the Protecting America from Chinese Cars Act, calling Chinese vehicles — even those crossing into the US on day trips — “surveillance packages on wheels” capable of feeding data to “adversarial nations”. Mexico has made efforts to placate Trump, who sees the country as a back door for Chinese goods into the US. In January, it slapped 50 per cent tariffs on Chinese cars.

They shouldn’t allow any surveillance software in cars regardless of what country it comes from

China can take a long walk off a short pier. Their faulty junk will never sit on my driveway.

“They are positioning themselves so that whenever the political landscape changes . . .”

Translation: When Trump is gone.

American politicians are inexpensive to buy, but are more than willing to be bought.

They are building better than any Tesla for a 1/3 the cost. Sooner or later they will be allowed in from demand alone.

Chinese cars are all over the place in Mexico City. I’ve been in a few. Not bad. Not really anything that screams I have to have one. The longevity of the vehicles is probably a big question mark, but some of the roads in Mexico City could eat the best of vehicles.

The other side of the equation is U.S. built cars. For the most part, some of the U.S. manufacturers pump out garbage as well.

So I'm guessing you drive a Japanese brand vehicle? Because many of the American cars are crap as well.

Surveillance software and a 75 MPG CAFE with heavy taxes AND EV mandates will bring China in. That’s what they are wanting. Pelosi started it with 35. Obama pushed it to 55 after seizing opponents. Biden had it at 65 and EV mandates. Gavin with a gas ban is China’s golden goose.

We know what China sees from leftists.

The bug is believed to have been found in a sealed part of the vehicle imported from China.

Tofu dregs on 4 wheels. Ask the Chinese about their domestic cars. They’re crap. But they’re the only game in town for most of them.

As an American, with our nation under the onslaught of crazy Marxists from within and outside our borders, globalists, and world-domination crazed Islamists, buying anything from China (or any other enemy entity) when there are alternatives is indefensible. Freedom, sovereignty, and self-determinism come at a cost, and if that cost is spending more money to avoid being a pawn used by a foreign Communist government that subsidizes its industries in order to destroy ours - so be it.
