Moscow has come under the largest Ukrainian attack since the start of the full-scale war, with close to 200 drones hitting targets around the Russian capital and setting columns of thick smoke billowing high into the sky.
Seventeen people were wounded in the Moscow region, according to local governor Andrei Vorobyov.
Almost 1,000 drones and four Ukrainian cruise missiles were intercepted and destroyed across the country in 24 hours, Russia's defence ministry was quoted as saying. An oil depot was struck in the southern Rostov region, where one person was killed.
Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had once again hit the Moscow region with "long-range sanctions" - a euphemism for Ukrainian long-distance strikes on Russia.
"It's time to end this war, and Russia must take the necessary steps in diplomacy," he added.
He said the massive drone strike was in response to last week's Russian attack on Kyiv, which set a major religious landmark ablaze.
"We don't want this war and have never wanted it," Zelensky said. "But if Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn too."

Too much death on both sides.
Prayers up.
Wasn’t this supposed to be over in a couple weeks with pootski steam rolling Ukraine? Lots of folks dying and disabled so far. Coffin makers and prosthetics makers staying in business. Sad! Will this be Afghanistan 2.0 for Russia?
The Pentagon Is Learning Drone Warfare From Ukraine
Forbes May 15, 2026
“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told senators this week that U.S. military personnel have been sent to Ukraine to study how drones are used in combat.
“I’ve personally approved additional personnel there to learn from that drone battlefield, both on offense and defense,” Hegseth said”
There is no doubt it has changed the game
Pretty sure the US got some first hand lessons in drone warfare from Iran also...but ok.
No, I don’t think that President Trump sent American troops to Iran to have the Iranians teach them fighting methods, nor is America helping Iran in their war against the Russian, North Korean, and Islamic Chechen army forces.
Two corrupt countries that are irrelevant. I could care less because it’s a European problem, not an American one.
What is in no doubt is that we support Ukraine and oppose Russia in this bloody Russian invasion.
Yes, and Zelenskyy was going to flee to one of his mansions on the Riviera or in Switzerland.
When the Army Apache and USMC Viper fleets age out, I doubt we’ll ever seen manned attack or scout helicopters again. Drones have become a much more cost effective, lower risk option.
Hardly irrelevant, this invasion has changed the world militarily from Sweden to Japan, and especially in Europe and America, and NATO, and has vastly changed NATO borders and European domestic politics and policies and even energy politics and policies.
Militarily the world today is very different from where it was in February of 2022.
‘Tis just a flesh wound….
Only proves Russia was never a real threat. Built up by Military Industrial group in USA to get loads of money from the tax payers. If Ukraine can beat them—they could never take on Poland or even Italy. Their nukes are worthless and may not even work—nor do they even try to use them. I bet China isn’t a real threat as well—maybe Taiwan could take them out—for sure Japan could. The war will end in a Russian Defeat and a break up of the Russian Federation.
I agree, you’d have to be pretty dumb to think that.
More like Iran delivered the lessons in drone warfare before Hegseth was prepared for them and now he’s getting some remedial education.
