US President Donald Trump tells reporters that Washington does not need a deal with Iran to get enriched uranium from the country.
“We could get it right now. I don’t think they could stop us if we wanted, but there’s no reason to. It’s entombed,” he says.
Trump also says that he did not want to meet with Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, but adds that “I’d be honored to meet him.”
He says if Washington and Tehran reached a deal, it was possible that the two would meet and adds, “If it happened… I’d be respectful.”
“In some circles he has a very good reputation actually,” he says of Khamenei.

I guess that means Trump’s stated goal of getting all the enriched uranium is off the table.
And that’s probably a good thing. Such a goal was unattainable anyway - unless Trump was willing to commit infantry, lots of infantry.
Trump is not doing himself any favors.

That’s a bad guess. What President Trump is saying is we could take it, but don’t have to, because they’re going to give it up.

I hope you’re right. But I doubt it. Iran is not run by reasonable people. It’s run by religious fanatics who hate the infidel. They will hide at least some of their uranium under lead in deep caves.
Then they will lie about it.
That uranium won’t do them any good down there. But it will be there. I think that’s what Trump is talking about.
I am going to take some heat for this.
Trump would be better off saying as little as he can about Iran. He is coming across as a man who wants to make a deal with someone who doesn’t.
Until there is a deal, there is not deal and that is that. Either execute a plan to open the Straight/resume hostilities or sign the deal that you can, declare victory and get out.

I agree. I’m a strong supporter of Trump. And of stopping Iran from getting nukes. But he needs to shit or get off the pot.
Anyone remember the the conservative militia leader in Afghanistan that agreed to a presser and the press had a bomb in their camera and killed everyone at the meeting ?

There’s now talk of an ‘Islamabad Accords” where Trump would arrange to meet Iran’s president in Islamabad to sign some sort of agreement to wind this war down. China is pushing Pakistan hard to try and get some kind of agreement between the 2 parties. Nothing official yet and this may not go through.
If such an outcome is truly possible, why didn’t Trump pursue it before committing to a war?

Turkey and a number of Gulf nations are pushing for this Accord. Oman and Bahrain now say they want the US out of their bases there. This is the best off ramp Trump is likely to get. Freepers will be mad but this is really the best decision for the US (and Israel).
He appears to be stuck on "Business Man" Setting, where both parties are sane and can come to an agreement via negotiations.
I get that President Trump is trying to achieve a Pax Americana in our time with the talents God gave him, but rabid dogs and unrepentant terrorists have to be put down - period.
He talks too much
I do not believe that is what President Trump is saying.
My interpretation is that he is positioning to declare victory and walk away from Iran. Congress appears non-supportive of any further efforts in a war against Iran. Popular support for the war from the American people appears to be fading as well.
The Iranian strategy of using the Democrats and Democrat-Lites (Republicans) in Congress to win the war for them looks like it is working. All the IRGC needs to do is survive until the Americans go away.
Not necessarily in that order.
Trump is playing 5D chess. Everything he says and does is purposeful. He’s keeping things confusing on purpose.
I stopped falling for that 5D chess argument quite a while ago. He has been and will continue to be an outstanding president. However he remains a fallible human being who could stand to practice the art of restraint before he posts on social media or speaks to the press.
Or the arranged meeting of al-Balawi with the CIA at Camp Chapman at which he activated a bomb vest and killed 7 CIA officers and contractors and two foreign assets.
You're absolutely right. I would not bring president Trump anywhere near them.
