Zelensky says he hopes Witkoff, Kushner visit Kyiv for talks
The Hill ^ | May 31, 2026 | Ryan Mancini

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday said he hopes White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will come to Kyiv, Ukraine, for talks in the coming weeks.

CBS News’s “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan asked the president whether he had heard from the envoys and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and whether they will ever travel to Kyiv.

“Yes, we count on [them] coming to Kyiv,” Zelensky said. “I hope that they will find a possibility to come here in two weeks. But at least I’ve got such message from my negotiation group, they told me that they had contacts with Steve and Jared, and they said that they are ready to come to Ukraine and to speak, if, of course, if- always if, you know, Margaret.”

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.

Zelensky elaborated that “‘if’ means Middle East,” referring to negotiations to end the conflict between the U.S. and Iran, which he called a “priority” for the U.S. This has led to “pauses in our diplomatic negotiations.”

“But I think that we need to see [the] American negotiation group in Ukraine,” he said. “They’ve never been here. I think it’s important, not [only] for us. It’s useful for them to understand, to see, to see people, that their life is going on, but we want to stop this war. It’s meant to stop Russia. They’ve been several times in Moscow. I said previously about it, if they want to go this time to Moscow, they have to come to Kyiv and then go to Moscow. I think it will be helpful.”

Zelensky said the best outcome is for the U.S., Ukraine, Europe and Russia to come to the negotiating table.

He does have a point.

America wants Europe to foot the bill for protecting Ukraine. Fair do’s. And that’s already happening. For almost two years, Europe and the UK have been putting far more support into Ukraine than America is. But instead of talking to Europe about stepping up even more, this adminstration keeps visiting Russia and taking whatever Russia spoon-feeds them to use as the draft basis for peace talks as if no other voice matters.

That is not how to be the honest broker of a viable deal.

“International deal-making” rule number one: You must always have all involved parties to the proposed deal, in the room, when you’re discussing the deal. Otherwise your deal will not be ratified, it will not be binding, and it will have no credibility.

Europe has to be in the room with the USA, if the USA wants Europe to be taking something on as part of any deal the USA negotiates. Otherwise Europe can do what Iran does - deny ever agreeing to anything the Trump administration claims has been agreed, watch the deal collapse, and laugh their asses off when Russia inevitably complains “Mr Trump, you’ve failed to hold up your end.”

The USA can go to Moscow and get Russia’s view, go to Kyiv and get Ukraine’s view, go to Brussels to get the EU’s view, and go to London to get the Brits’ view (or get them to go to Washington), if putting all five parties in the same room at the same time is impractical/impossible.

But the absurdity of needing all five parties to agree to a deal while three of those parties have no idea what’s being negotiated and are being completely ignored throughout, guarantees “no deal” the minute they’re asked to sign a bit of paper.

The massive use of propaganda, government information operations intended to influence perceptions, especially that much of this has been concealed, combined with censorship, has at least for me, caused me to become extra cynical regards Ukraines position.

Instead of getting me to waive the Ukrainian flag, it caused me to believe nothing I am told and become extra scepticle regards Ukraine. Not that I’m anti-ukraine, I’m somewhat neutral and see both of these states as very similar in many ways, and this conflict as stupid and avoidable. But especially from the Ukrainian side, I just don’t believe anything I read.

Maybe I am overly skeptical now because of this, IDNK.

But I do not see Ukraine in a winning position. I just see a bunch of smoke being blown. Stories about Russian losses which are BS (make belief numbers), stories of Mr. Z Being loved in Ukraine (make belief numbers), stories about “game changers” (our modern day Wunderwaffen), it was nearly comedic in the beginning with stories about the “Ghost of Kiev, fighting to the last man on Snake Island, and images of 12 year old girls with suckers in their mouth, blue and yellow ribbon in their hair holding a shotgun (like they will hold off the Russians - really cheesey crap)... Remember the glorious and highly successful counter offensive of 2023, until it was not? Trash, trash, trash.

They lost credibility and my trust early on.

They should have stuck with telling the truth and maybe injecting a little bias and spin (subtle persuasion), but attempt to stay objective mostly, that would have made them more trustworthy.

IMHO, when someone lies and repeatedly discredits themselves, the only folks that believe them or quotes them are folks not interested in the truth, they are guided by some ulterior motive.

Darling you may recall President Trump devoted time, energy and sent envoys to Ukraine, attempting to settle the war. The ungrateful Zelenskyy apparently wanted to continue fighting Russia. There was no deal to be had.
The straw IMO that broke the camels back was Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House, televised for all to see. Zelenskyy’s insulting ungrateful behavior was on full display. He was so ugly that the scheduled luncheon was cancelled and he and his entourage were told to leave the White House. They left and I personally belief we should not give them the time of day.

Now Trump is sending American GIs to Ukraine to learn from them while bringing in Ukraine manufacturing to America to build drones.

I hope not. The US needs to stay away and dump any more support for that money pit.

America has no need to protect Ukraine. They aren’t even an ally or our responsibility.
