A federal judge ruled, opens new tab on Thursday that the terminations of hundreds of humanities grants last year by the Department of Government Efficiency were unconstitutional, and involved "blatant" discrimination.
In April last year, the administration terminated more than 1,400 grants, representing over $100 million in congressionally appropriated funds awarded to scholars, writers, research institutions and other humanities organizations.
The terminations were part of a cost-cutting drive
The judge said the terminations violated the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment, which provides free speech rights, and its Fifth Amendment's equal protection component. The ruling also said DOGE did not have the legal authority to terminate the grants.

The actual dollar savings from the federal workforce reductions are highly disputed, with estimates ranging from billions in long-term savings to net short-term costs due to payout programs and spending on private contracts.
Some departments spent more on contractors, shifting budget from personnel to commerc8als
The judge is wrong.
Appeal this.
Judge is Southern District of New York, appointed by Bill Clinton.

DISQUMINASHUN!!!!!!
What drugs are these judges using to connect actions to laws and Constitutional Amendments that don’t pertain to them? Are they the same drugs that elevate them to a position above the President? Can one get them legally or do they have a junior clerk get them from a dealer in the nearest ‘hood’?
😴😴😴😴
Because the government won’t give money away is violating first amendment? How are they prevented from voicing anything or getting the money from private donors?
What a crock.
One wonders how much was laundered back to Democrat candidates or funded partisan events. .
Contractors are cheaper...you don’t have the pensions and healthcare lifetime costs.
What free speech rights? They can still have free speech, just not on the taxpayer’s dime. This is yet another BS ruling that needs to be overturned.
Crazy. No one has a constitutional right to government grants.

.” In April last year, the administration terminated more than 1,400 grants, representing over $100 million in congressionally appropriated funds...”
Since the funds were appropriated by Congress it would have required congressional action to withhold or terminate them. The goal was right but the method was wrong.
It’s not about whether they have a right to such grants (nobody can claim such a right) it is about how the money was appropriated. The money came from congressional action and to terminate the funding requires the same.
Trump passed a lot of good executive orders as far as I know most have not been solidified by Congress. Which means those actions can be undone by the next administration. I think it is urgent to get laws passed to match Trump’s EOs
Here we go again. DOGE didn’t terminate anyone or any position. They observed and recommended to the POTUS to do it under the rules established. The rules and parameters for this U.S. government initiative were established by President Donald Trump via an executive order issued on January 20, 2025. Another lie.
