Separatist movement seems to be booming after court blocked Stay Free Alberta petition

A rally for Alberta independence in Airdrie had no shortage of encouragement from passersby on the highway, as it appears an Ottawa-appointed judge blocking the Stay Free Alberta petition has strengthened support for the movement.

Alberta's growing separatist movement is gaining momentum following a controversial court ruling that temporarily blocked a citizen-led referendum on independence.

In Airdrie, supporters of the sovereignty movement voiced their frustration with Ottawa, skepticism toward federal institutions and anger over what they describe as decades of Western alienation.

The recent court decision that found the Stay Free Alberta petition was unconstitutional, citing a lack of sufficient consultation with First Nations groups regarding potential impacts on treaty rights.

But that ruling has become a flashpoint of supporters of independence, many of whom believe the courts are obstructing Albertans from democratically expressing their views on separation. Go Ad Free

In their eyes, Western Canada is being economically exploited by Central Canada while lacking meaningful political representation, a feat obviously observed when the federal Liberals are governing in Ottawa.

Throughout our report, those we heard from expressed frustration that the federal elections are largely determined outside of Alberta and regardless of how Western Canadians vote.

Perhaps more damning of Mark Carney's Liberal reign is the parliamentary majority he acquired through spineless floor-crossing from MPs who betrayed their own voters to lock in personal riches.

Unlike protests in the past, one particular thing stood out as new: the non-stop honking from those driving past on the highway.

There's a lot of debate in the media over how popular separatist sentiments are in Alberta, but for well over an hour during the demonstration, you'd be hard pressed to go a minute without hearing someone honking in support.

The Albertans will need to kick off first, a lot like the folks in Donbas Ukraine, before Putin/Trump intervene.

If Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba secede from Canada, they should not become U.S. states. There are too many governmental and cultural differences over 250 years of separate development. We should have a free trade agreement with the breakaway provinces and a mutual defense pact. Successful separation would lead to an isolated British Columbia, the province with the most intensive CCP infiltration. Ontario and Quebec may go their separate ways if the western secession takes place. The Maritime Provinces are a problem; they are essentially Canada's Appalachia. They are culturally somewhat like northern New England, but politically more leftist than even Vermont. You could wind up with a communist government there, in other words Cuba with lobsters. Quebec also has serious leftist leanings, and a communist government is another issue: Cuba with poutine.

As badly as Canada is governed, a breakup of that country may be worse for the United States.

Completely different dynamic, and the separatist movement is weakest in cities like Edmonton and Calgary. Patience. The movement is NOT yet at solid majority, and while Trump stirred the pot (maybe good long-term), he makes it easy for Canada's Deep State to paint the movement as stooges for the U.S. Albertans are also concerned that the U.S. just wants Albertan oil and gas, and isn't being idealistic or even altruistic. We should support her freedom from a distance, and not push for her to join the U.S., where she would be an even smaller dog than she is in Canada. Offer protection, trade deals, alternate access to the coasts, but not statehood or territorial status.

The other problem with Canada is the massive amount of 3rd World immigration they have allowed in the last 10 or so years.

Albertans are convinced that Canada is throwing whatever road blocks they can to stop it. It helps Albertans believe that they really would be better off as Americans.

Based on what I know, if Alberta had been a state instead of becoming a province:

Alberta would be top third tier state in economic activity.
Alberta’s GDP would be about $150 billion higher yearly.
Our taxes would be about $50 billion lower.

An we would be much more developed than we are, for good and bad. That’s why it scares Canadians and why it should anger Albertans.

We have the same problem as well, but at least President Trump has established effective border control. Annexing a Canadian province would open floodgates to the immigrants who are there, legally or not. It is better that we not annex any breakaway province.

Alberta would be fine. We are almost there, as is.
It’s part of the reason that Canada hates Alberta, because we remind them of you, like a hated son reminds his mother of his father.

Alberta for Albertans. The US has no role in this matter. If we intervene at all the Canadians will see it as US meddling. This is a proud moment for western Canada and we should give it a great big, powerful leaving-alone.

Ted Turner has passed, so Albertans don’t have to worry that he’d buy it and turn it all into a ranch.

The outcome will be that Ottawa will just be ignored

Regarding President Trump, Alberta has had representatives in DC for months now.

They negotiated the first major new pipe line deal down through Montana with private American oil companies. Otta was just ignored

I believe Alberta and probably Saskatchewan will become an American territory

The problem with American annexation of a Canadian province is that, if the citizens of Alberta voted to join the United States, there would likely be a large minority of Albertans who regard themselves as Canadians and not as Americans and who would oppose their province joining the Union. Then you are stuck with a restive minority, like the Catholics in Northern Ireland or the Palestinians in Israel.

Anything Trump might say would be counterproductive—if he expressed support for Albertan independence that would hurt its chances.

Re: restive minority, like the Catholics in Northern Ireland or the Palestinians in Israel.

Excellent examples. I’d like to suggest ones closer to home, like the FALN, and it’s spinoffs, in Puerto Rico. The USA has historically NOT been immune to terrorist attacks based on grievances (real or not) from annexed territories.

Not so sure that establishing Canadian provinces as not-quite-territories would neccessary ensure safety either. The Philippines was a US Colony, never a territory, de facto stopped being a US colony in 1941 and de jure in 1946 ... and still has anti US terrorist groups to this day.

Partnering with a foreign country is a risk, no way around that. I believe that the US and potential partners in the prairie provinces, and maybe Ontario, would all benefit economically and for national security reasons were there some sort of joining ... but there are likely to be some real lives, as well as dollars, lost no matter how such a partnership is structured. Because of that, I hope that whatever relationship the US and Canadian provinces have is at arms length for at least a generation.

Yes it did come close, but then Quebec was allowed its referendum by the feds.

Alberta does not rise to the level of Constitutional Francophone gravitas?

Carney is a laugh.Typical British nobleman lording it over the peasantry.

I want to see Alberta separate and join the USA after a period of being a protectorate from the leftist dweebs in Ottawa.

Louis Riel is rolling over in his grave,he finally gets revenge.
