Australian drone show fails as nearly 90 fall into water

An Australian drone show descended into chaos when technical failures caused nearly 90 drones to plummet into the waters of Darling Harbour in Sydney on Monday night.

According to news reports citing drone operator SkyMagic, 89 drones landed in the water due to an “unforeseen change in the radio frequency.”

“This anomaly caused a number of drones in the fleet to enact failsafe landing procedures in response to compromised positional accuracy,” SkyMagic said in a statement.

The failsafe involved some of the drones forming a cluster before descending.

“No vehicle escaped the safety boundary of the show parameters, and the reaction of the pilots and crew was timely and appropriate in accordance with our operations manual and processes,” SkyMagic said.

This and another story about Russia disabling and re-routing Ukrainian drones is good and reassuring news...

While drone tech appears scary... They can be defeated by superior tech transmitting new directions... Making this form of warfare already obsolete.

So you’re not familiar with fiber optic controlled drones?

They are far from obsolete.

Dumb Australian drone show operators. They should have immediately declared that this was a water show exhibition.

Just another variation of the wire-guided missile....

To avoid radio jamming....obviously it has range limitations but good within the length of the cord. Would be mostly used in front line situations.

Yep. Unreels a long FO link.

Obviously range is much shorter. But doesn’t have a traceable / jammable EM link.

Yes, from 5km to as long as 100km to provide unjammable control.

You have to see it to believe it. There are towns in Ukraine and Russia that are COVERED with drone filament!

My fire-prone city has switched to drone shows for the 4th of July instead of traditional fireworks.

I’d rather have drones falling on the dry hillsides than live fireworks.

Lithium batteries may be worse. Not sure I would be happy with either if I lived in a fire prone area.

Very true. They are the primary drone methodology used in Ukraine and Lebanon right now. Almost unstoppable. Around half a dozen IDF soldiers have been killed by them in Southern Lebanon this year.

They also have created an environmental catastrophe in Ukraine, with millions of miles of discarded, non-biodegradable polymer "glass cobwebs" across thousands of square miles.

Making this form of warfare already obsolete.

No, they just need anti-jam data links. These were probably just hobby level drones.

Nice of the news footage at the link to cover the bottom portion of the screen with graphics ... covering up the drones falling.
