SecState Drops Update: Big Progress on Iran Peace Deal
Red State ^ | May 24, 2026 | Ward Clark

It's beginning to look a lot like there's a deal with Iran in the making. President Trump has been making optimistic remarks, while noting that the United States is sticking by its one primary point, which is preventing Iran from ever making or obtaining a nuclear weapon.

On Sunday morning, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in India, delivered the latest news on that front.

The post by Eric Daugherty reads:

JUST IN: Sec. Marco Rubio says MAJOR PROGRESS has been made with Iran, and GREAT NEWS could be coming soon on the Strait of Hormuz

LFG! πŸ”₯

Rubio is dealing overseas, working hard!

"Maybe more news coming out a little bit later today on this topic. Some progress has been made, significant progress, although not final progress has been made."

"The goal here ultimately, the ultimate goals that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon."

"The President has been clear about that. They will never possess a nuclear weapon, certainly not as long as Donald Trump is President of the United States. Related to that is this issue of the Straits."

"The problem is going to be solved one way or the other. We've made some progress over the last 48 hours working with our partners in the Gulf region on an outline that could ultimately, if it succeeds, leave us not just with a completely open Straits, and I mean open Straits without tolls."

"And with addressing some of the key things that underpin what has been Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions in the past."

"So we think we've made some progress on the outline of something that, if it works, could give us that outcome. Obviously that will require full Iranian acceptance and then compliance. And it will require some future work on negotiating the details."

The full video may be seen at the post above. This confirms what we've been hearing over the weekend: The United States, Iran, Israel, and the Gulf States are on the cusp of a deal. Exactly what terms the deal will include remains to be seen.

At one point, Secretary Rubio responded to a questioner in a manner that was, shall we say, impassioned:

Secretary Rubio said:

There's no one who has been stronger on this issue than President Trump. Multiple political leaders, multiple presidents of the United States have all said that they think Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. The only one who's tried to do anything and has actually done anything about it in a real way has been President Trump. So his commitment to that principle that they'll never have a nuclear weapon shouldn't be questioned by anybody. And the idea that somehow this president, given everything he's already proven he's willing to do, is going to somehow agree to a deal that ultimately winds up putting Iran in a stronger position when it comes to nuclear ambitions is absurd!

That's just not going to happen. But our preference is to address this through a diplomatic means, and that's what we're endeavoring to do here. I think they've made some progress. I'm always cautious when I say that because you can agree to things on paper. They actually have to be implemented. You can agree tp things in writing, and then you actually have to go out and do it. But I do think perhaps there is the possibility that over the next few hours, the world will get good news, at least with regards to the straits. With regards to a process that can ultimately leave us where the President wants us to be, and that is a world that no longer has to be in fear [of a nuclear Iran].

Here, Secretary Rubio hits a key point. Any deal with Iran is only worth the paper it's written on until the Iranian regime shows that they are willing to live up to their end of the bargain. If they don't, and the track record of the Islamic Republic here isn't great, then we are back to Square One.

Also, earlier on Sunday, RedState's own Susie Moore brought us the president's comments on the potential Iran deal. The best part is what Susie describes as a typical "Trumpian flourish":

Obviously, this is a fluid situation, and the details have yet to be laid out (or formally agreed to). Note, however, that extraordinarily Trumpian flourish at the end there:

"I would like to thank, thus far, all of the countries of the Middle East for their support and cooperation, which will be further enhanced and strengthened by their joining the Nations of the historic Abraham Accords and, who knows, perhaps the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to join, as well!"

That right there is some classic Trump. I'd say the odds of Iran joining the Accords are pretty small, microscopic in fact, but who knows?

Reality: The US Navy was simply not able to secure and control the Strait of Hormuz. As long as the mullah regime remains in power and there is no definitve answer to the drones, Iran controls the Strait and who sails through it.

There are nine nuclear countries. North Korea has nukes and is probably more than willing to sell to Iran.

More smoke and mirrors about the Iran “deal”. You can’t make a deal with the devil. The only agree to things that further their goals and ambitions. This is only a “deal” until it’s not.

Trump is more afraid of high gas prices than he is a nuclear Iran. He kicked the hornet’s nest and now he needs to take care of the rest of the hornets. It will be a nightmare for republicans at midterm, but this problem is not going away.
