A fire at a Staten Island dockyard sparked a massive explosion that left 16 people — including 13 firefighters and two emergency medics — hospitalized on Friday, according to the FDNY.

The blaze ignited in the basement of a metal building at the rear of the coastal facility in Mariners Harbor around 3:30 p.m., fire officials said.

Just over 50 minutes later — well after the inferno at the Richmond Terrace dockyard near Andros Ave. had risen to a two-alarm fire — the building was suddenly rocked by an explosion that fire officials described as “major.”

One civilian and two firefighters suffered serious injuries. Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries, while nine firefighters and two medics received minor injuries. All injured parties were transported to local hospitals.

At least 16 people were hurt, including 13 firefighters, after an explosion at a dry dock facility on Staten Island, according to police and fire officials.

A fire was reported just before 3:30 p.m. Friday at the facility on Richmond Terrace in Mariners Harbor, police said, with an explosion reported about 45 minutes later. The FDNY said there was a fire in the basement of a metal structure behind shipping docks, with reports of workers trapped.

Two people were pulled from the area and taken to nearby hospitals, fire officials said.

At least 16 firefighters suffered injuries battling the flames and the blast, though more than half had minor injuries. Two firefighters had serious injuries, while two others had moderate injuries, according to the fire department.

Probably storing dangerous materials or containers/barrels. At a dockyard could be anything. Hopefully not fertilizer like the Beirut port explosion! Looked like a nuclear blast. Killed hundreds, injured 1000s and displaced 100,000’ of people. Here’s a video starts 2 seconds before the big blast.

They should have run out the door and dived through the air just as the explosion went off. That always works on TV to avoid injury from any explosion.

The yard probably works on fiberglass boats, large ones, almost all fiberglass repair materials are flammable, if not explosive and must be stored properly sometimes kept separated in storage.

34 of the 35 injured in the Staten Island explosion and fire were from the FDNY. (One civilian was also killed.)
