Democrats won an unexpected victory Tuesday when legislation to halt the Iran war cleared an initial hurdle in the Senate — a vote that strengthens their hand in the increasingly fractious debate over the conflict.
Critics of the military operation took advantage of a shorthanded Republican conference — three GOP senators missed the vote — resulting in a 50-47 decision to force debate on a rebuke of President Donald Trump.
War opponents gained another GOP defector in Sen. Bill Cassidy. The Louisiana Republican, who voted to convict President Donald Trump in the wake of his second impeachment over the Jan. 6 insurrection, lost his reelection bid this weekend, after Trump supported one of his challengers.
The vote is a blow to the present and Senate Republican leaders — who defeated seven previous attempts to limit the war. Democrats will likely tout it as progress in their pressure campaign against Republicans.
But it was only the first step for the resolution to advance, and likely would have failed if all GOP senators had been on hand. The legislation will need to clear several more steps before it can pass, giving Republicans opportunities to kill the measure in the coming days. Trump and GOP leaders were similarly able to flip Republicans to sideline Venezuela legislation in January after it cleared an initial vote.
Cassidy was the latest casualty of Trump’s campaign against fellow Republicans who’ve crossed him, although it’s sparked concern that he could prove a thorn in the MAGA agenda. His surprise Iran war vote was his first such foray into frustrating GOP business. Cassidy, after the vote, said the administration owes Congress more details on the path forward.

The only way I would feel comfortable telling them anything, was if you locked them in secure room, and they didn’t have access to their phones, tablets, etc. And kept them there until whatever you were telling them was going to happen, happened, and was publicly released.
