On Shabbat morning of February 28, as Jews gathered in synagogue to read from the Torah about the importance of remembering – and destroying – the evil Amalek, American and Israeli fighter jets began their own destruction of the Iranian military.
Since then, not only have America and Israel been cooperating at closer levels than ever before, but for the first time, Jewish and Christian soldiers have been fighting shoulder to shoulder, representing a new chapter in Judeo-Christian civilization. Ten weeks later, this coming Shabbat will serve as another historic milestone.
Never before in American history has a president invited his entire nation to observe the Jewish Sabbath. However, US President Donald Trump issued a formal proclamation calling upon all Americans to honor Shabbat on May 15-16.
Trump declared, “This day will recognize the sacred Jewish tradition of setting aside time for rest, reflection, and gratitude to the Almighty... I further call on all Americans to celebrate their faith and freedom throughout this year, during this month, and especially on Shabbat, to celebrate our 250th year.”
Trump’s call for Shabbat did not emerge in a vacuum. It follows the posthumous publication of Charlie Kirk’s final book, Stop in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath will Transform Your Life, which has become a bestseller and ignited unprecedented non-Jewish interest in one of Judaism’s most ancient and treasured practices.
Kirk, a lifelong defender of Israel who was assassinated last September, ended his Friday podcasts by wishing his millions of listeners “Shabbat Shalom” and encouraging them to put their phones in a drawer for 24 hours. “The Sabbath saved my life and helped preserve my family and my career,” he admitted.
Charlie Kirk became the leading advocate for Jewish Sabbath observance after meeting radio host Dennis Prager.

I leave you with this from Isaiah:
“As for the Nations who attach themselves to the Lord, to serve Him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be His attendants, all who observe the Sabbath and do not desecrate it, and who hold fast to My covenant, I will bring them to My sacred mountain and let them rejoice in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices shall be welcome on My altar; for My House shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
Isaiah 56:6-7
Trump should call for a Jubilee year, where all debts are forgiven. That’s real rest. Will that ever happen?
oh, certainly not. I shall not holdeth my breath
"the 'rightful place' for the inverted nuns text" (re the Ark of the Covenant).
Jubilee year? Hey there, lets not get carried away here! They are all cool with the Amalek part, but if you start costing them money.... they’ll pump the brakes hard!
Sol Invictus won’t be pleased to hear this.
A Jubilee Year would make the future so bright for a lot of people. That’s how you get a civilization to last for thousands of years instead of a couple hundred.
It sounds crazy. But two things would happen. Some people would get a fresh start. And the moneylenders would naturally become more circumspect in their loan making overall.
Maybe that would lead to a society less run on debt.
Definitely. Lenders would have to adjust their thinking. But, as far as I know, there isn’t any proof in the Bible that a jubilee year actually took place. I can’t find one maybe someone can dig one up. Verse or something. So maybe it’s something that’s never happened in human history before. That wouldn’t surprise me.
and encouraging them to put their phones in a drawer for 24 hours
Sure. No one calls me anyway. Does it start at 6pm or when the sun physically sets?
Sunset to sunset.
Sadly, I believe the forgiveness of debt only applies inside the borders of Israel.
They do do the whole “crop resting” thing in a lot of kosher food production farms in Israel. I’ve read it a couple of times and it’s basically just good semi-desert crop rotation and rest.
Thinking about how it would work in the USA, the bond market, mortgages, and a lot of things would have issues. People lent money with the intent it be paid back.
So you’d have to do it far in the future — 30 years or something. Of course, what would happen is new mortgages would suddenly become 29 year mortgages. Then 28, 27, 26 . . 1, None, then 29.
It’s a fun idea, but wouldn’t work in the modern system.
oh it’s a dream all right. Never happen. But I like when the government picks and chooses Bible verses.
They could pick the verse and then say “well, only in Israel” (which is what the verse says).
So much of what people complain about (purity laws, whatever) don’t apply to gentiles, at all. Indeed, a lot of the weird ones don’t apply to most Jews, just priests (and then at certain times).
The Jubilee verse is one such inapplicable verse.
Shabbat, as noted by Elijah, is a gift to all peoples of the Earth, should people accept it.
Isaiah, sorry.
Yes but what I’m saying is that when an economy gets turned on end, and the wealthy own and control everything, and everyone else is at the bottom — a reset is a nice dream. A fresh start. Shuffle the cards around a little. I don’t appreciate turning the same old billionaires into trillionaires. yippee
Deut 23:19-20
“Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother, interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest.
You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite
This encouraged two things: lending by gentiles to Jews and Jews to gentiles. The purpose was to keep the two communities tied financially and cooperating.
You always here about “Jewish money lenders” in the middle ages, but what happened most often is a gentile would lend money to a Jewish guy (permitted) who would then lend it to a different gentile (and vice versa).
The verse also discourages consumer-type loans where someone bought something that didn’t make a profit, as people were to live within their means (e.g., a car nowadays).
Loans for a profit (say a loan to buy seed to plant or inventory for a store or manufacturing) were explicitly OK, as that is considered an investment or partnership and the lender gets part of the profit if the crop/business goes well (and nothing if it goes bad). This discouraged predatory lending.
It’s not nearly as nefarious as the stereotype plays out.
But just like the Jubilee year, I’m wondering if loans were ever given without interest. I’m wondering if someone can find a verse about that. That might be a nice dream too
They actually do the loan-for-profitable business all the time in Israel.
Consumer loans are difficult to come by, as are even credit cards. They do things like loans from what we would call a credit union where it’s depositors and borrowers are members, so the risk and rewards are shared.
The result is people have crappy old cars and modest homes.
And live within their means.
LOL, I wonder if it EVER happened? Or if THAT law got conveniently forgotten?
