Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp signaled his state is joining the nationwide redistricting battle Wednesday by calling for a special legislative session to redraw the congressional maps.
Kemp signed a proclamation that calls a special session of the Georgia General Assembly for June 17 to address the Supreme Court's historic ruling that is expected to require changes to the state's electoral maps before the 2028 elections.
The Supreme Court ruled last month that Louisiana's second majority-Black congressional district relied too heavily on race and was therefore an unconstitutional gerrymander.
The special session will only be allowed to cover two topics. The first is considering enacting, revising, repealing or amending state law to divide Georgia into appropriate districts for the State Senate, State House of Representatives, U.S. House of Representatives, or any other state office elected by district.
The second addresses issues created by a July 1 date for changes to the state election code enacted under a 2024 Georgia law.
The changes to state law and redistricting will not impact the 2026 midterm elections because early voting in Georgia for the primaries are already underway and regular voting takes place next week.

I thought I heard that, since early voting had already started in Georgia, it was too late to redistrict.
Come on. Is he really in?
Wonder what changed his mind? Blanche? Vance?
Early voting for Georgia's 2026 primary elections (May 19) began on April 27 and runs through May 15, which has made it too late to implement new district maps for this year's elections.
Article says this will apply to the 2028 elections as the 2026 elections were already under way.
How many people will comment without reading the article?
It almost certainly is way too late for 2026. The news story specifically mentions targeting 2028.
Please be advised the post says it. One shouldn’t commit others to not so interesting subjects. Between Kemp and Raffesenberger I could care less.
Do they ever stop voting in Georgia? It seems like they have early voting season for primaries, then voting seaon for primaries followed by early voting season for general elections, then voting season, then they have early voting for the run-off election.
The redistricting won’t take effect this year, so he’s half way in...........
This is for 2028, not this year..........
Kemp is calling a special session in June to redistrict for 2028.
So he’s doing the right thing, late.
Too late to affect ‘26 elections. Kemp may be happy with that but doesn’t deserve all the blame. Blame the liberal SCOTUS members who delayed releasing their dissents so the LA decision came out too late for some state’s election calendars to permit changes.
Most of them! :D
This is tiresome. Looks like the Candidates are picking their voters rather than the voters picking their candidates. Just stop it already. Registries after census (10 years) or census more often.
Here in Ohio the Ds wanted to redistrict to a 6-5 (existing 8-3 R to D) even after Trump won 80 out of 88 counties. (8 point spread) very corrupt process.
Georgia was going to get sued by the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ if it did not comply with the SCOTUS ruling...and Georgia was going to lose.
Not sure what that even means but I hope you enjoyed writing it!
Sounds like he is looking at the direction in which the wind is blowing. Am I correct?
He’s acquiescing because he’ll be out of office before then..........
