A judge in Alberta on Wednesday delivered a blow to activists’ efforts to hold a referendum on the Western Canadian province’s split from the country, siding with an Indigenous group that argued the government has an obligation to consult with it as their rights would be directly affected by secession.

The Court of King’s Bench of Alberta ruling sided with the Indigenous group, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, in its lawsuit against the provincial government.

The group argued that the secession of Alberta from Canada would introduce new international borders, violating its rights under long-established treaties.

The group maintained that the government was obliged to consult it before allowing activists to collect signatures to force a vote.

I knew Canada would find a way to prevent a vote. They must really fear that the good people of Alberta would vote for secession.

yeah, no country is going to allow a state to go rogue and leave. It’s fun to think about, but it isn’t going to happen.

Ironically, this is going to make Alberta more likely to vote “yes”. If they have the guts (probably not, they’re Canadians).

Western democracies like Canada and the United States are all about self-determination. Let the people choose!

Except in their own countries, of course. Then it’s the “one nation, indivisible” stuff.

(I’d like to say more, but I’m afraid I’d get a visit from Gen. Sherman.)

The judiciary is the last defense line for established political forces.

I’d like border counties to decide what state they want to be a part of. I think it’s criminal to have conservative rural counties oppressed by Illinois.

Idiotic decision. This will be overturned.

BTW, reports are that about half of all Natives in Alberta actually support independence, it’s their so-called leaders - the ones who always get the fat checks from FedGov - who are opposing the independence vote ...

It was certain that the government would find a way to deny the petition. Canada wants the oil sands royalties and don’t care what the people want.

Im not sure how much this type of thing comes into play here but the courts have repeatedly ruled in favor of tribes gaining land they claim was theres mostly just because they said it was theirs.

Canadas version of Silicon Valley? The tribe didnt want it until the white man came and built great teepees. Now its big wampum and they demanded it back and won.

Let the people of Alberta vote.

They will vote against it, but they should be allowed to vote.
