GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans faces backlash for agreeing with ‘cotton-picking’ comment about Hakeem Jeffries

WASHINGTON — Vulnerable Rep. Jen Kiggans, a Virginia Republican, is under fire after she agreed with a radio show host who said that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — the highest-ranking Black lawmaker in Congress — should get his “cotton-picking hands off of Virginia.”

Kiggans, one of Democrats’ top targets in the November midterm election, later posted that the host “should not have used that language” and that she did not condone it.

But that did little to satisfy Democrats, who have condemned Kiggans and urged her to formally apologize. The second-most powerful House Democrat has called on her to resign.

Kiggans was being interviewed Monday by radio host Rich Herrera on “Richmond’s Morning News” about the midterm elections and Democrats’ redistricting efforts in Virginia. Herrera said that if Jeffries wanted to be involved in Virginia politics, then he should move from New York and run for office in the commonwealth.

“If not, get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia,” Herrera said of Jeffries.

“That’s right,” Kiggans replied. “Ditto. Yes, yes to that.”

Kiggans later posted on X that she was agreeing with Herrera’s sentiment that Jeffries should keep out of Virginia politics — not with the racist phrase that has ties to slavery and sharecropping.

She should run for President. I like the way she calls a spade a spade.

Meanwhile, the dems are running an actual Nazi who proudly wore a Nazi Totenkopf tattoo for years (until he decided to run for office) for Senate in Main.

Too damn bad. Common expression. No one picks cotton anymore and there sure aren’t any slaves.

Here in SE Missouri if you say that most people would think you’re talking about white people 75 years old and plus because that’s what they did for a living.

“Now wait just a cotton pickin’ minute” was used in the 1953 Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes cartoon Bully for Bugs. Bugs says, “Hey, just a cotton-picking minute. This don’t look like the Coachella Valley to me,”. It was also used in the 1957 cartoon Romeo Rabbit.

The meaning was first used by pea and cotton picking workers to describe the heat injury to the brain from excessive physical labor in the hot Sun. Mental effects included forms of delirium. Some went into heat stroke.

NOT just black people.

Let’s ignore his race (which we should).

No matter what his background, he is a glittering jewel of colossal ignorance. As such he should treated as a card-carrying member of groups with similar abilities and intelligence.

As such, as a Democrat congress-critter, he is solely entrenched in that group. He also is fully qualified as a member of our legacy media. He is receiving all ‘respect’ that such a laughable bigot and clown deserves.

Cotton pickers produced a product useful to society. He has produced nothing of value in his joke of a life...and he never will.

I worked with a white gentleman who is in his 80s and he said he picked cotton as child. He said there was an old black woman who was the best picker, she always had the most picked at the end of the day.

He being a youngster , figured he had the advantage and one day he challenged her . Of course he was jabbering the whole time . At the end of the day she had won . He, being frustrated , asked her what her secret was . She said, “ I pick and keep my mouth shut.”

She clearly needs to develop better political self-awareness! She’ll survive this.

That is correct. When I heard this on the news, I could not see where the racism was lurking, until they told me.

I have heard that many times as a kid.
